Got an alert that legendary composer Burt Bacharach passed away at 94.

Man, he wrote some incredible songs over the years. Even before I paid attention to who the writers of songs were, I knew who he was.

I just posted a short retrospective on the CLASSIC R+B, SOUL, HIP-HOP, ETC thread about Burt's music, just off the top of my head picks and memories.

He wrote Close To You by Carpenters, On My Own by Patti Labelle & Michael McDonald, Arthur's Theme by Christopher Cross, Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head by BJ Thomas, and a ton of songs by the great Dionne Warwick.

And that's just naming a few.

My dead didn't own much music. It was basically a small stack of 45s. One of them was Marlene Dietrich's "Sag mir wo die Blumen sind". It's a German translation of a Pete Seeger song. Marlene's concert master at her 1962 recording was Burt Bacharach.

I'm trying to think of another composer during the '70s who wasn't a singer-songwriter or some other type of performer, but I can't. Yes, there was Sondheim and other Broadway composers, but they weren't creating music to be played specifically on the radio. A great one, no doubt.

Favorite song would have to be The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (I can do a passable Gene Pitney impersonation, too! ), but the first one I ever heard probably was The Blob.

Oh, anybody married to Angle Dickinson for even a second was one lucky guy.

A critically important songwriter for so many artists. I just loved his music and several of his hits remain among my favorites to sit down and play.

Maybe, but I think of him as a performer, too.

EDIT: I never realized how many albums Bacharach had and even Gold ones. In that case, I guess he was a performer, too, so the whole discussion is moot.

Raquel Welch passed away at 82.

I saw her in Fuzz in '72 (at age seven, I was more interested in Burt Reynolds and Yul Brynner for their coolness), but I think it was when I was 12 seeing her in the prehistoric bikini from One Million Years B.C. on a poster that made her my ideal woman in my mind. Oh, there are some very, very close, but she would be tops for me then, now, and forever. I even dated a girl for a time because she resembled her!

    RIP

PS She was great in the The Three Musketeer movies. Raquel might have been a goddess, but she did have some talent, too.

A fan of both father and son, they made Hagar a comic strip lure for many decades.
