A damn shame. Some of his best seasons were here in Philly when he was considered one of THE best hitters of his generation. Even more of a shame was that Allen never made it to Cooperstown in his lifetime, an honor he more than deserved.

I remember when he played for the Chicago White Sox. He was pretty popular at old Comiskey. I didn't realize he's not in the Hall of Fame with his stats. He better get in there next year when the Golden Era committee meets again.

He definitely deserves it based on his stats, but he developed a a major rep as a jackass. I don't recall him at his peak (he career was almost over by the time I discovered him), but jackass or not, he won more games than the majority of players enshrined ever did. IMO, he's an easy choice for the HOF.

Character off the field factors in to it, too, though.

He really was a Greatest Generation story. Humble origins in WV, who elevated himself through talent, and hard work. Unimpressive student, who still managed write detailed reports as a test pilot that engineers found incredibly valuable. Fearless, and incredibly skilled at what he did at a time when it was one of the coolest vocations on the planet. Perhaps most impressively, he was never shy about acknowledging how lucky he'd been and how many times he easily could have been the occupant of an unremembered grave.

One of the great air and space heroes of all-time, it's nice that he got his due back in the '80s.

IMO, nothing that he did deserved an exclusion from the Hall.

Sad. Earlier this year I picked up some old Heavy Metal mags with his art in them. He had such a unique style, all his own, with an incredible sense of how to tell a story through pictures. And, lets face it, a kind of softporn sensibility to his art that was similar to that of Wally Wood.
Every day is a gift, not a given right.
