There are a few celebrity deaths in my lifetime that I can remember everything I was doing that day and August 16, 1977 might just be #1 on that list.

How sad. Mr. Gregory lived a damn good life.

It's funny, but I have known Dick Gregory since the '70s, but I don't think I ever saw him do anything comedic beyond Tonight Show clips from the '60s. Activist is what I know about him the best.

    RIP

Me too. I really don't remember much about his days doing stand up. After cancelling an appearance, his last post on Instagram while he was in the hospital "I've so much to say and can't wait to get out of here and say it," He didn't get a chance to make that rescheduled appearance. One wonders what he would have to say about this past week.

I remember him trying to help these sad people who were severly overweight and trying to get the healthy and up and walking again.

IIRC Glen Campbell played by ear and never could read music. Even though he didn't get good reviews, I liked him in True Grit with John Wayne and Kim Darby. I still like that version better than the recent remake.

Also, weight loss guru for some very unhealthy folks who were quite large, sometimes virtually immobile, alone, frightened and without resources!

Dick Gregory got them all the help and care they required! I believe Dick may have even teamed up with fitness/weight loss star-to-the-stars Richard Simmons.

This is a huge loss to the entertainment world - how many people were as popular as he was in movies, television, and, in his later years, theater? As funny as he was, he was also terrific as a dramatic actor.

The first time I ever heard of him was due to the animated Saturday-morning show Will the Real Jerry Lewis Sit Down? circa 1970 (voiced by David L. "Squiggy" Landers). The first film actually starring him has to have been Cinderfella (first Martin & Lewis movie was definitely That's My Boy!). Favorite one? The one with Miss Purdy, of course.

    "LADY! PRETTY LADY!"

He was a complex person, not easy to love, or even like in person. But made millions laugh and was an innovative film maker.

I did love his movies as a kid.
There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!

Forgot about his telethons, which I watched as a kid. First one most likely was 1973. Whatever you think about them (I had no problem with the ultimate goal, FWIW), they were a great way to see lots of big stars all at once.

That is certainly true. I also never understood his thoughts regarding comediennes not being funny.
