John Mahoney, the English actor who became a familiar presence on American television as Kelsey Grammer's cranky-yet-sensible father on "Frasier," has died. He was 77.

Mahoney died Sunday after being hospitalized in Chicago, where he lived. His death was
confirmed by the Steppenwolf Theatre Company, where he'd been an ensemble member since 1979.

Though Mahoney was best known for his role as Martin Crane — the ex-cop who regularly deflates the fully expanded egos of his two sons — his career was expansive and he tackled complex characters in both film and television.

He appeared in "Eight Men Out," "Barton Fink," "Tin Man" and "Moonstruck" and was a regular performer at the Steppenwolf, the acclaimed Chicago theater company.

Mahoney was twice nominated for an Emmy for his performance on "Frasier" and won a Tony Award for "The House of Blue Leaves." Mahoney's recent roles included guest appearances on "Hot in Cleveland" and a 2015 episode of "Foyle's War."

He was the preeminent leader of religious Americans in our lifetime. I doubt his kind will be seen again.

I knew her from The Vicar of Dibley with Dawn French.

Emma Chambers, who played Honey in the 1999 Hugh Grant-Julia Roberts film “Notting Hill,” has died, the BBC reports. She was 53.

Chambers’ agent, John Grant, told the BBC that the actress died of natural causes on Wednesday, and would be “greatly missed.”

The famous British athlete Sir Roger Bannister has passed away aged 88. He will always be famous for being the first man to break the four minute mile in 1954.

That he was. Major Winchester will always be his greatest claim to fame, but he was always solid in anything he did.

    RIP Sir Roger Bannister.
He had the record for less than two months, but we still talk about him today because breaking the 4-minute mile seemed like such an impossibility at one time.

I also went to Tower Records a lot (Broad & Chestnut Streets, downtown Philly), it was like nirvana when it came to shopping for music. When Tower went belly up and closed, it became an FYE (For Your Entertainment), then they folded some two years ago, now it's an arts and crafts store. Sadly, Tower fell victim to iTunes, Pandora, Spotify, IHeartRadio and other music streaming services, hell, even Best Buy will stop selling CD's soon if it hasn't already.
