Default How WEIRD do you want your WORLD?

One of the things I'm most excited about regarding the upcoming SECRET WARS stuff is Jason Aaron and Mike Del Mundo's Weirdworld. Check out the solicits for the first two issues:

    Issue #1:
Welcome to the wildest, most dangerous new corner of the Marvel Universe. Welcome to Weirdworld.
    • A world of swords and sorcery and strange, perverted science. A world where one barbarian walks alone, on a dark and savage quest though all things weird and fantastic from throughout Marvel history.
    • His name is Arkon. A lost man in a lost world. Follow him if you dare.

    Issue #2:
Weirdworld is where the lost things go. Like the barbarian lord Arkon, who’s now prisoner of the underwater apes.
    • Or like his cellmate, a mysterious one-eyed man who appears to be made out of rock and calls himself a Crystal Warrior…

If you're like me, and you love it when Marvel utilizes forgotten or abandoned concepts from the oddest corners of the MU, then this should be something to get excited about!

There's very little info out about this series, so what I most want to know is what/who you'd like to see show up in this! What crazy characters do you want to see Jason Aaron write about? What manic monsters do you want to see drawn by (the super-amazing) Mike del Mundo?

-Pav, who wonders if this is where we'll see Obnoxio the Clown...
You were Spider-Man then. You and Peter had agreed on it. But he came back right when you started feeling comfortable.
You know what it means when he comes back
    .

You want it weird, why not add characters from Marvel's cartoony Star Comics imprint? Or the Seuss-like characters from the dimension Here (And There)? Or Slapstick!

I'm really hoping Weird ends up being closer to obscure than zany.

Not a big Jason Aaron fan, but I'm getting it because Mike Del Mundo is on art, and he's fantastic.

I don't think that or Obnoxio is the sort of "weird" they're talking about. Seems everything is still very serious, and everything so far seems sword/sorcery.

Maybe Marada the She-Wolf and Ashake.

Wonder if Marvel owns Starr the Slayer. I would think so.

They do own Starr the Slayer. They don't own Marada the She-Wolf, which belongs to Bolton and Claremont. Titan Comics put out a beautiful Marada HC two years ago including a never-published story.

I'm really looking forward to this comic. Amidst all the Secret Wars stuff, this seems to be one of the few that is "stand alone" and easily accessible for readers. Plus, compared to so many of the other tie-ins, this seems like one of the few that could conceivably keep going after Secret Wars is over (and the universe/main Marvel characters go back to normal).

Of course, I won't be shocked if it doesn't keep going due to sales. It doesn't seem like many people on the message board are getting this one.

I love that Skull the Slayer is being added to the mix too. I read his series a few years ago and it has so much potential for more. I, like many other in this thread, doubt that this title will go on for long, but I hope it does. There are so many stories that could be told here.

    "The Warlord and the Witch!"
Finally! Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch are back!
Where have they been since (escaping from Magneto in) Avengers 53?
The twin mutants along with the Toad had been traveling through Europe looking for a way to restore Wanda's hex power!
But unfortunately Pietro's arrival at Avengers Mansion all by himself signals that something has gone terribly wrong!

Days earlier while reading from an ancient tome,

Wanda accidentally opened a portal to another dimension…

and Arkon the Magnificent came crashing through!
In a matter of seconds, Arkon grabbed the Scarlet Witch and took her back to his kingdom on Polemachus!
So now fast-forwarding to the present, the Avengers must find Arkon,
rescue Wanda, and, oh, prevent the nuclear destruction of the Earth!

First appearance of Arkon (in a flashback).

Script by Roy Thomas. Pencils by John Buscema. Inks by Tom Palmer.

I've been buying STRANGE ACADEMY and generally enjoying it's fun but forgettable cast of characters. Because let's be real: I'm buying because of Toth, who is somehow a young denizen of Weirdworld who is half-Crystal Warrior and half-Man-Thing.

I hoped that eventually his inclusion would lead to more reasons for Weirdworld fans to read the book, and this week's issue did that very thing!
