And if so, did she die the same way her Earth-616 counterpart did?

I don't think Gwen exists in the newspaper strip. You have to remember that the strip was created in 1977 by Stan Lee and John Romita, Sr. That would place its creation after Gwen's death in 616, and just after Gerry Conway's original run where Peter and MJ begin their first romantic relationship.
I figured it could be the case. However on the most recent strip...

I think it was established last year Gwen's death story is canon to this strip"
Does anyone have a reliable link to this?
Gwen Stacy was never included in the newspaper strip.
I think in the foreword for either the newspaper strip collection or the Wedding Collection Stan Lee goes into a deep introduction to Peter's life and stuff. One of the things was that he tried to make Gwen as popular as MJ, but couldn't. So when the newspaper strip came around instead of trying again to make Gwen popular (especially after her death), he decided to go with Mary Jane. And really cause of it's format, it only needed one girl for the series.
So it turns out in today's newspaper strip that Gwen Stacy did in fact die. Same way as the comics and how it lead to Norman's death too.

It's just really weird because there was no mention of her prior to today.
But then again the strip did make the fight with Venom in Spider-Man 3 canon.
