    Now that the TV show is going to continue past the end of the published books, I don't know if he'll have much interest in finishing them at all. Does he really want to end up having the last couple of books be novelizations of the HBO series?

    yeah that would effect his schedule and effort he made into those books.

    He could also just not have them be novelizations of the show.
