I'd like to nominate Punisher MAX by Ennis. Next to Watchmen my new all-time favorite book, and I'm only 12ish issues in. It is absolutely amazing in every shape.

Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men is now our first series on the 'essential' list! Do we have any other nominations for Punisher MAX being on the list?

I'll be honest and say I haven't read Punisher MAX yet, but I was thinking that civil war should probably be on the essential list??

Punisher Max is a must read. I don't think you will find many that disagree unless the simply do not like Punisher

I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I would suggest Young Avengers (vol 2) by Kieron Gillen is another must.

Hey that's basically the whole point of comic book forums, so why not?

It seems like you're a Daredevil fan.

    Have you read this issue?

You might wanna read a few issues ahead to get the whole story but man this was a good one. One of the best single-issue "Daredevil" stories ever.

    X-Men: Magneto Testament

    (Greg Pak, Carmine Di Giandomenico)

    The definitive origin of Magneto.

    Excellent comic. Critically acclaimed.

Some minor spoilers and more details in the thread linked in my signature. :P
I loved that Scarlet Spider series, especially the parts with Wolverine and Kraven. Didn't read much of New Warriors except for maybe the first 3 issues though. I'm hoping Kaine comes back in the Secret Wars Spider-Island story.

Punisher Max and Daredevil are pretty much the best and most consistent Marvel books out there.

But I was wondering about some of the pre-Ennis Punisher stories??

Anyone got recommendations? When Mike Baron was writing them. I read a few issues and I didn't like it at all, in fact it was flat out idiotic (ex: the issue where Punisher hunts down some Taxi Driver and then blows his head off with a shotgun lol...cringe-worthy)

PUNISHER:War Zone#1-7 Vol. 1-written by Chuck Dixon, and John Romita Jr. ,and Klaus Janson on art. Frank infiltrates a mafia family to destroy it from within. Those familiar with the Thomas Jane flick will see where they got the idear for Castle's interrogation of Mikey. Also Garth Ennis said the storyline was a big influence on his seminal "Welcom Back, Frank." storyline relaunching the character.

Daredevil Child's Play is a pretty good Punisher story imo.

As far as Punisher MAX goes, you'll want to read ALL of Ennis' work. Start with the un-numbered "Born", and work through to "Valley Forge, Valley Forge."
Then you have two choices. You can pick up the also un-numbered Ennis MAX collection, "First To Last", this collects "Punisher, The End." You can read that story, and be happy with that as your ultimate ending to Punisher MAX.
Or you can go from "Valley Forge, Valley Forge," to the Jason Aaron PunisherMAX stuff. It's basically a continuation of the Ennis MAX-verse, but it wasn't as well received as the Ennis stuff. Don't get me wrong, Aaron writes a very good Frank, but Steve Dillon on art is a massive jolt to the murkier tones of the Ennis stuff.
I'd also recommend Fury MAX as well.
