Happy Birthday to the late GREAT Steve Gerber!!!

Steve Gerber starts his tenure on Son of Satan with Marvel Spotlight 14.

    Poor Guy.

Gerber is stuck with this HUGE lame duck character.
Damien has no personality, no supporting cast, former writers had failed to establish a consistent tone, and nobody even really knew what freaking genre they were working in.

And somehow Gerber made this mish-mash work.
And, strangely, except for establishing a consistent supporting cast, he did it without really fixing any of the above problems.

Basically, Gerber did two things to make the book his own.
    (A) He dished out some of the most creative plots of his career, and (B) used the whole “Brat of the Devil” bit to provide a springboard for some thoughtful speculation as to the nature of life and the universe.

I've not been reading that series, but did anyone else? How did Daimon come across?

He's comedically shortsighted, because it's an all-ages comedy book, but he's also powerful, intense, and appropriately defensive when someone brings up the last time Patsy went to Hell "for him." Which was a nice callback, since that story tends to get misremembered/talked about from the standpoint of summaries rather than having actually been read. It should be a "You don't know; you weren't there!" point for him.

I've been thinking about Hellstrom's MAX mini, lately, and Alexander Irvine's claim that, by tackling fathers and sons, he was doing something radical and original with the character. To be fair, the story was an unfinished one, unrelated to our boy, but that can have benefits, that can force an author to get right to the integral aspects, something I think that we've seen, in comics, with The Ultimate Galactus Trilogy and even various Elseworlds or Imaginary Stories fitting superheroes into classical narratives. And, Equinox isn't a bad comic, though it's basically a YA novel with more f-bombs. There were scarier Defenders stories with Hellstrom.

Unless I'm missing something (big!). Am I?

Is it true that Marvel is not allowed to use the name Satan anymore?

It's used prominently in recent issues of Patsy, to refer to our favorite Son of.

Wasnt that not him, but an aspect of him?

Because Bunn used him as a villain and then Hopeless did the same, but then Bendis and Gillen used him as a hero and so the explanation was the evil one wasnt the real one....or something?

Four writers attempting to make sense of the character to the reader with the result that it went straight to hell
