Well, Ditko Gwen was basically an Ayn Rand heroine right?

not having read them, i was genuinely wondering. i would never have picked gwen for that sort, from what i’ve seen...

was it in your face? or more the natural effect of a writer’s sensibilities?

Stan Lee did provide the dialogue, so he it's not exactly comparable.

I think people like to project objectivism into their reading of the stories because they know this detail about Ditko. There are moments when Peter could come off as a bit of a dick in the Ditko era. Don't know that too much should be made about that though.

Mr. A and The Question are Ditko's specifically objectivist creations.

There were unambiguous moments though, such as with Spidey swinging by the college protests and criticizing them. Needless to say, when Ditko left, Lee and Romita overhauled the entire tone of the series and softened the personalities of characters such as Peter, Gwen and Harry.

There's a scene in one of Ditko's later issues where Peter yells at some protesters. Al Ewing amusing called back to it in Captain America and the Mighty Avengers.

Oh, who's never wanted to punch a protester?
