I reckon he could work, he's armed with a shovel and could fire breathe with his lamp or even possibly raise the dead. If they can make Agaitha work they can make anyone work.

I'm not going to pretend like female characters are interesting because they're female.

I hate "cute" characters. Lana and Agitha could be the most broken characters in the game and I'd never play them. Ever.
Zelda, Midna and Fi do nothing for me.
Impa looks alright though.

I've been pretty happy with all the characters that have been revealed so far. Never been a big Zelda fan but from what I've seen from gameplay vids most if not everyone looks fun to play as.
