Default Should the Bat SIgnal be Taken Down?

The Bat Signal has for a long time been Iconic and a Symbol to Gotham that the Batman protects the City, however it is now just a big target to Gotham city and its people. How many story arcs have we had over the past couple of years when the Big Bad targets Gotham out of some twisted attraction to upstage or get vengeance on Batman. How many times does it need to be said that Gotham needs Batman? At this point Batman = Caesar in terms of influence and power in Gotham. I feel that Batman would be best served by returning to being a Weird Figure of the Night that people speculate or know that he exists but he is rarely ever seen or heard from.

The Batman is too Big and needs to return to being a stealth detective and I think the best way to do that is to take Down the Bat Signal. I know its a part of Batman's lore but is really unnecessary for what his original goal was and is a symbol for just how Big and Oversized his reach has become. With the ever growing roster of people who can be considered Batman Family/Batman Inc he is more close to being Ra's Al Ghul than ever before.

    Thoughts?

What do either of those have to do with the bat signal? Its not as if that light is the only reason people know Batman works out of Gotham City.

    He's not, really.

Which, really, is just something that lasted for twenty years in the middle of his existence. It's not what he was created to be or has to be. It's also kind of silly when you stretch it out too long.

How is it unnecessary for his original goal? Heck, it makes his goals easier to achieve. It probably scares criminals out of muggings or driving meth through Gotham just because it's up there.

He's not a drug-dealing, warmongering terrorist jerk with slaves and an army of assassins who likes to kidnap, torture, assault and murder people. Who also talks about how he's in it for ecology while living as a mad billionaire in giant castles, drinking rare wines all the time.

Wasn't that what they said about Jason?

A dig at the OPs user name.

As to the question posed, I fail to see why. Its not like the signal increases the threat level to Gotham.

    Cheers.

Might as well drop the batmobile and batwing too. Using a mini-tank or weaponized sports car and jet within city limits ain't very stealthy.

Batman should just drop the bat, and just become man.

    It looks great.

But its more than a wee bit outdated. Back in the day when batman first appeared it looked like an incredibly modern "cool" way to put out an emergency call. As technology moves on it loses a bit more appeal each year.

Gordon gave a great answer to your post in The dark night Returns and in the dark knight. Of course they can call him by other means. But it let people know he's there. it's a symbol.

I have a special fetish for them shining the signal somewhere other than a patch of clouds. Shooting it down onto a building or just tagging the symbol on an alley wall, leaving a note on some guy's desk.

    It's a promise.

Maybe for the 21st century it should also be an app so that people can be alerted on their smart-phones when the police need to call Batman? It could even have a ring-tone-like feature that's the theme music from the 1960s Batman TV show?

I like that Jimmy Olsen's signal ring sound is his ringtone now (and that it's usually Clark calling him).

As brand-conscious as we are now, as totemic as these things are, it'd be a shame not to fully embrace them.
