I really like those as well. They would've been on my list if I'd gone to 15, but I didn't want to get too carried away...

You certainly aren't. Loved Van Halen since the early 80's. Big fan of either Van Halen or Van Hagar. In fact I saw Van Hagar at the old Wembley Stadium in 1995. Bloody ace. Worth the entrance fee just to see Eddie do his thing. Best songs (for me anyway. I'll go for favourite tracks from each album):

Van Halen: Ain't Talking 'Bout Love
VH2 (difficult one. I see the whole album as a more relaxed version of VH1): Woman In Love
Women & Children First: In A Simple Rhyme
    Fair Warning: Unchained
Diver Down: Little Guitars (1 and 2)
    1984: Hot For Teacher
    5150: Best Of Both Worlds
OU812 (another difficult one. A more commercial VH certainly): Feels So Good
    F.U.C.K.: Judgement Day (great riff)
Balance: The Seventh Seal (what an album opener)
    VH3: Without You
A Different Kind Of Truth: Tattoo.

Tips of the iceberg those though.....

EDIT - This prompted me into listening to VH3 for the first time in well over a decade. Odd album and, actually, the best track on it for me may well be 'Once'. It's just so different.

Actually, the 'A Different Kind Of Truth' album really did quite well considering. It sold well over a million copies worldwide and for a band of Van Halen's age and longevity that is quite acceptable. Plus it was their first album in well over a decade.

Rock album sales are nowhere near the levels that they were in the 70's/80's/90's and it was never going to achieve multi-platinum status. It's rare that albums can reach those levels of market penetration in the modern era. Shame.

ah, ok - didn't know it sold well. But yes, the days of Pink Floyd The Wall selling hundreds of copies per second (or whatever that insane rate was) are completely gone with legal downloading (thus songs are sold vs full albums (unless iTunes forces the entire album on you)) and illegal donwoading....
I plan on finishing my own album one day and I'd be be lucky to sell 50 copies!!

Really? Best of luck with that then. I hope you manage to create something you are really proud of.

It's not all doom and gloom either. There are so many promising young rock bands doing the rounds at the minute. They all know that they'll never release a 10 million selling block-buster album but they are still passionate about the whole rock 'n' roll lifestyle, the ability to create music and play it to a live audience. They'll never be multi-millionaires and be rich enough to drive Cadillacs into swimming pools and all that but as long as they can earn some sort of a living out of music then that's good enough. Rock has essentially turned into a cottage industry in the 21st century (albeit a big one) and it's all the better for it.

for me, it's only three "GREAT" songs:

"Running with the Devil" , "Unchained" and "I'll Wait"

although the only thing I've ever heard with Hagar singing that I liked was "Poundcake"

Thanks. I love my music but I have no ability to listen to it objectively. I have 2 things against me: first off, as you and I know have already discussed, there's no chance of crazy number of sales and 2, I am in the NiИ, Ministry, Marylin Manson category --> when's the last time you saw a band of that aggressive noise mounting the charts, eh?
