    "Dark enough."

    Wow.

Like all people of color are the same?

    Insanity.

The film doesn’t go in-depth into the protagonist enough for an origin story. Just compare it to Batman Begins which it shares some similarities with:

    spoilers:
Both origin films with a protagonist that has a mentor who turns out into a bad guy(Ra’s Al Ghul and Yon-Rogg) and has the idea of falling but getting back up.
    end of spoilers

Captain Marvel does not go anywhere as deep into its protagonist as Begins does, wouldn’t you agree?

    spoilers:
Imagine if Ra’s Al Ghul and Bruce had as many scenes together as Carol and Yon-Rogg. Imagine if Bruce’s relationship with his father was handled like Carol’s relationship with Mar-Vell, where they only show his death and not show how he inspires Bruce.
    end of spoilers

So much more could have been done with Carol if the film was longer and/or cut out useless scenes like Fury playing with tape. Could have explored Carol’s Kree identity so that the reveal could landed better. Which is what the prequel comic StarForce Mission Log did.

Att-Lass ( Algenis Perez Soto) is her “brother”: Stealth infiltration specialist his weapons are twin pistols. “We’ve developed a strong bond and are almost like brother and sister.” Her so called “brother” is the Infiltration specialist ? I think there’s a pattern brewing here. He’s a Kree top military spy. Will he be simmed?
    https://www.bleedingcool.com/2019/02...spin-off-book/

    spoilers:
He’s the Kree that said “don’t make me do this” to Carol hinting that there was a close relationship between the two. Some serious missed opportunities in that movie.
    end of spoilers

The stuff I wrote below the video are my words alone.

Do you think Captain Marvel went as deep into Carol’s character as Batman Begins did for its protagonist? Just answer that question.

I was specifically talking about the memory of the Skrull attack before the revealed. Like does does it haunt her in any way like Logan’s memories do? Does it make her have a personal resentment towards the Skrulls? Is it the reason she wants to serve the StarForce? At best it’s only implied.

Exactly but they move the goal posts when you point this out. they claim she isn’t dark enough as well which is BS.

Notice how these people ignore this when MCU movies do it.
You need to calm down. Yes Zaga is Brazilian, but he’s not black. Cecelia Reyes is Puerto Rican who is black. Brags is neither. Blu is questionable. And I don’t know why you’re throwing around MCU fanboy just because people are critical of Fox.

that kinda irks me a lil bit...... it's mostly black/Brown fans upset or even acknowledging it. like We all read and loved the same New Mutants comic?

Yeah buuuuut depending on where your goal posts are so are a lot of Americans lol Blu Hunt and I sure the same amount of NA ancestry (if you believe her webpage) but I wouldn't be right/ feel okay cast as Warpath. Dani is a non-white proud rezzy Cheyenne Hunt a white chick with NA ancestry .... not downplaying her heritage but as someone who has PowWow'd with my tribe and gone through the government and tribal hoops to become a member. it just looks janky as hell no tribe claimed her until much later. And hilariously Boone cashin in his nerd cred tweeted he'd never cast "a model who is 1% and claims heritage" lol

    hmm
I guess this is why racial representation matters a lotta people think Brazilian/Hispanic/Latin are all monolithically tan color

not experiencing life/situations identical to a person of a different age/race/gender/sexuality/mobility doesn't automatically invalidate when they speak on it. +Shipps continually tone deaf of the criticism is proof someone else should play the character

    .
Sunspot is Afro Brazilian, Celia Reyes is Afro Latina, No they are dark enough but this is pick your battles type situation. They have been lighten these two characters forever that this casting accurate to what they look like in books now. Shipp and Blu Hunt are okay casting but yeah if given the choice you could find actors who may look more like the part like this

My person view on the situation I am not going to whine that Blue or Shipp get the part, If they were by far the best actor in the auditions I am fine but when part is available like with Storm in the MCU, I think yes they should try to hire a dark skin black woman. Black Panther was a revelation they actually hired Dark Skin black women instead of typically light skin woman that get parts in hollywood. And there is a great story of Amandla Stenberg turn down the part of Shuri because she knew was too light. If part ulimate goes to best actor I am fine with biracial or lighter skin actor playing the parts but doesn't mean you shouldn't try to accurately match ancestry of the character if you can.

Lets calm down with the "dark enough/not dark enough" talk. It won't lead anywhere good.
    You brought back Wolverine

Not talking has helped create/nourish, the slow and silent 'lighting up" of many minority characters

Lots of Yikes ... I wish folks really would listen when others speaks and try not to go out of their way to gaslight folks when they make legitimate critiques. Just because its not your experience or you dont have knowledge of it doesn't mean its not correct or is an issue.

And yes, Bertos and CeCe's casting was def a slap in the face. But so was the exclusion of Karma. Like lets be 100, that was messy.

Also CeCe has been depicted 99% of the time as a dark skinned Afro Latino with textured hair in comic books.

I think you all know me well enough around here to know I wouldn't troll intentionally, and I want to ask a serious question.

In the case of Roberto, let's say hypothetically that several Brazilian actors auditioned for the part and Zaga won out because he was simply the best actor of the bunch and had best chemistry with others (which is a factor in casting). Would that change opinions of his casting or do folks think that they should have gone with someone of darker skin in the end to better match the character?

Reason why I ask is that as someone who's worked in casting situations in the past I absolutely have seen this happen and legitimately am curious of everyone's thoughts. Had I been in the casting chair, I likely would have cast Zaga too if he was the best fit... however I would have tried much harder to find someone of color to play Celia without question.

That would be my question: How many Afro-Brazilian actors actually auditioned? And of those that did, how did their auditions and chemistry with the rest of the cast compare? Were there scheduling conflicts? Should they have passed on a Brazilian actor if there wasn’t a viable performance from one of African descent? Which is more important? Casting looks? Nationality? The best performance? Where do you make concessions to account for the available talent pool?

If either of you were a person of color, you wouldn't be doing this mental gymnastics routine. Hollywood casting agents can find whoever they look for with unnerving skill. They just have to want to find them. Hollywood has a history of racism and colorism and Fox in particular has had a horrible track record with their handling of the non-white X-Men. Storm has only been cast with half-white actresses, and hardly used as anything more than a SFX. Angel was cast with a half-white actress, turned into a stripper and villain. Bishop and Darwin were literally BLOWN UP onscreen after doing almost nothing with them. Whoever that was in First Class didn't even have a single line. Jubilee hasn't used her powers once, despite being in at least three films. This is not an isolated incidence.
