The 90s ruined comic shops. They got this reputation for being bastions of fanboyism because folks with very little in the way of social grace were running them. They weren't all like that, of course, but that's what happens when anyone thinks they can run a business just because they have a bunch of longboxes in their basement.

It's not just the 90's, but the internet. In this thread alone, I've read comments about Miles Morales being Bendis' worst creation or people refusing to read Al Ewing's amazing run on Mighty Avengers (essentially "Black Avengers"). Add in the reaction to a bi-racial character replacing Peter Parker in an ALTERNATE universe and over two years of complaints about Michael B. Jordan being cast as Johnny Storm with absurd claims of tokenism and studio involvement when in reality, he was the first actor cast because the director wanted to work with him again. New comic fans want absolutely nothing to do with those people.

Its also white males who felt equally ashamed/disgruntled/discouraged/unhappy with comic shops before there was a cultural shift to embrace more casual fans (which has happened over the last few years).
