I wonder if it would be worthwhile to just have a megathread for SW 2099 #1-4 since these series are so short. Anyway, development in this issue:
spoilers:end of spoilers
- The Specialist (a baddie from the original Spider-Man 2099 series) attempts to kill Roberta Mendez, but she changes into Captain America and stops him. The Specialist kills himself rather than being taken alive. Roberta still doesn't remember her time as Cap. Her husband is revealed to be a sleeper agent who keeps an eye on her.
- Black Widow's been eating criminals. Miguel warns her to either stop or at least hide it better.
- Hercules is still Hercules. We see him wrestling Junkpile (an old X-Men 2099 enemy). He bumps into Roberta and calls her "Captain." Is she beginning to figure things out?
- Miguel sends the Avengers after an arms runner who apparently employed the Specialist.
- Unfortunately, the Hulk 2099 has gotten to him first. He doesn't want the Avengers getting in the way. This leads to a conflict between the Avengers and the 2099 Defenders: Hulk, Strange, and Silver Surfer. Next issue's cover includes Roman the Sub-Mariner and a 2099 Valkyrie.
All in all an OK issue, though it's in the middle of the story (is this 4 or 5 parts?) so we're left hanging. I still feel like Sliney's art is a little static--there's a scene with the Specialist in the beginning that repeats a panel and looks very dry for what should be a dramatic moment. Also, there's still no apparent connection to the larger Battleworld story, as we have no references to Doom or Zombies or whatever. That's fine with me, though people may question what the point of the series is when it has no larger connection to the event. Lastly, it's still unclear how this connects to either PAD/Sliney's Spidey 2099 series or the original 90s run. We still don't know how Miguel got back to the future, what he's up to, or how spoilers:end of spoilers is alive or why spoilers:
Hulk end of spoilers. Hopefully that's coming.
Strange is no longer a demon
