I'm not pushing it as a heroic choice or anything. Quite the contrary.
But, it opened up Jim from being hero commissioner who stands in the night waiting for Batman into a character who, himself, can grow and change, a character who can take actions that will surprise us. The affair should surprise us.
It also shows a man who'll do things he knows are going to go badly some day, because his gut tells him to. A man who figures out the consequences after he does what he feels is right in the moment.
The kind of man who'd accept help from a Batman, but whose life doesn't revolve around Batman, either.
