He really flip flops on the issue. In ASM he was willing nay desperate to join so he could earn a stipend and then in Thor while fighting him he took a dig at him about being an avenger for the stipend and referred to himself as a good samaratian working class hero. He also almost beat him to a pulp so he had to flash lightning to make him stop then he asked what stipend was he referring to which made him wonder why no one had told him and it must be due to the fact that no one likes him. Here it seems that other avengers didn't even have money on their minds but Spiderman thought that a guy like thor granted he was eric at the time worked as a avenger only for the money and when he found out that it wasn't so he thought it was because no one liked the new thor which makes him seem pretty mercenary. Of course maybe it was all PIS as he almost defeated Thor or frustration due to his rejection when he applied for membership.

Who would hire a known menace?
"I can talk to spiders"
- Kaine Parker
He wasn't considered a menace by the superhero community as such later on. Anyway if Moonknight a certified loony toon could get hired when he worked as a mercenary why'd Spiderman be left behind? He just never actually worked as a mercenary because he had found the bugle.
As it turned out he ended up hiring himself as his bodyguard a la tony.
