Default Original Art Shelf Porn: Show Me the Goods!

This is the thread in which you can show off all of your original art. That means your commissions, your convention sketches, original pages, all of that!
I, myself, only have one piece, a commission by the amazing Joe Rubinstein, whom I had the pleasure of meeting (Truly was a pleasure) just this month. Here it is: 11349963_10206056981610984_935538339_n.jpg
    Now, what about you?
"Para bellum. Sic vis pacem, para bellum. Every dawn, the boot camp sergeant made them recite it like a prayer. A litany. A declaration. Sic vis pacem, para bellum. The hitman's name is Billy "The Beaut" Russo. The Costas love him so dearly, they've made him fireproof. But there's fireproof and fireproof. Sic vis pacem, parabellum." -Frank "Punisher" Motherloving Castle.

That's pretty cool. I'd love to see the other two, y'know.

Just got my first two ever! So begins my journey into having as many artists as possible draw their renditions of my favorite character - Hellboy

Ben Templesmith. He was very excited to do this!

Jeremy Treece. Smaller name artist but he did full color and killed it!

Since I'm clutching my wallet much tighter as a first time commission buyer, I looked for guys who I considered good deals or included color. Ryan Ottley canceled but he was my #1 want, and I also really wanted Matteo Scalera but he was a little too pricy at the time.

My latest; an original art page from Terry Moores Strangers in Paradise. Probably my favourite comic so was pleased to snag it.

    Ah, these are beautiful!

Awalk1227, I'm loving both of them. That Treece piece is wonderful and, if I'm judging from that, I'm sure that won't be that last time I hear that name.
Bearded_Adam, that Herr Starr is fantastic, even better than Cassidy.
Dark-Flux, that's cool, I've been meaning to check out Strangers in Paradise.

Did you set up the commisions ahead of time, and then pick them up at the convention? i've wanted to look into having this done, but wasn't totally sure of the process.

Hellboydce - Oooh, Hitman! That's the kind of series that despite the fact that I haven't read it, I know I'm going to LOVE it.

Probably my favourite Ennis story, he is reigned in by the fact that Hitman was part of the DC universe proper, so he couldn't just fill the story with "fucks" and people having horrible things done to them, he actually had to come up with a good story, with characters you cared about, whereas now days he can just do what he wants, don't get me wrong, for the most part I enjoy most of his series, its just I wish he wouldn't try to shock just because he can

Good question! Get prepared for a walloftext, because I wish someone had explained this all to me beforehand. It depends on the artist and it's kind of confusing. In order to get in touch with some of the artists, I had to visit their Twitter pages, Tumblr blogs, artist websites, art agencies, or find them at the con. Some take requests ahead of time and need money upon picking it up at the con. Some only set things up through a 3rd party agency. Some take commissions at the con if there's enough time and they aren't full. Some take cards, a lot are cash-only Here are a few artists and how they do things:

Ryan Ottley - Found out via his Twitter that he was doing first come, first serve. I got there as quickly as possible on the first day to find out he wasn't able to make it.

Matteo Scalera, Tim Sale, Juanjo Guarnido, Klaus Janson, Cary Nord - Searched for them and sent an email through an art website. These guys are all represented by a company called Essential Sequential. They were all set up in the same area. I had to get in touch with a person from the company if I wanted a commission. He gave me the rates based on artist. They preferred to set things up beforehand and collect money (cash only) upon receiving the sketch. A few artists in this group (there were more I can't remember) were still taking commissions. Perhaps the 3rd party company is why it was a little more expensive, but I really want art from some of these guys.

James Harren - Found out on Twitter, I think. Strictly took requests before the con. A lot of artists do this so they don't get loaded up and can work on things ahead of time. He said if I had a small sketchbook he would do a quick small sketch. I didn't have one.

Geof Darrow - Sent him a message on Facebook. Said he wasn't doing commissions because he wants to do his own stuff, instead of getting more "batman requests." Totally understandable. He brought a lot of original art with him though (pages from his books, etc)

So it's funny, Templesmith and Treece I got set up just by walking up to them and asking if they were still taking commissions. You'll know who is because they'll have a small sign at their booth detailing prices. It'll look like this:

    COMMISSIONS
    Bust - $$
    Full body - $$
    Color (some don't do this) - additional$$
    Extra characters - additional$$

I was kind of awkward with Templesmith (my first commission ever). He needed to know my deadline first, so he could prioritize when to draw it. I said Sunday morning and he said that worked. Then he asked what I wanted. I told him I know artists get bored of some stuff so I wanted to know what he liked to draw. He said not to worry about it, and as much as he gets Batman requested, he still loves drawing Batman. He said if I really cared about that, he was into Ghost Rider at the time. That's when I said "...Hellboy?" He smiled and said he'd do a great Hellboy, and that he draw him like Mignola, thinner, and with horns intact. I said that sounded great. I also picked Templesmith because his commission sign said it included watercolors which I consider a huge added value.

Treece's commission sign also had options for color that I considered great prices given how large the sketch ended up being. I liked the rest of his art so I struck up a conversation with him and this time I felt a little more comfortable asking for something specific (Hellboy).

I learned a lot and next time I think I want to spend a little more time looking at different artists I may not know ahead of time, and contacting people before the con. Ideally, I'd have one or all of mine set up beforehand to pick up. If not, I would do as much exploring of the artist's section early on the first day, to pick out who I liked and give them plenty of time to finish.

Oh! Also, if you're looking for a quick sketch, you can find those very cheap or even free if you buy a book. Matt Kindt did an awesome sketch (with some color!) In my copy of Pistolwhip, Kagan McLeod did a sketch in my copy of Infinite Kung Fu, and Andrew MacLean did a quick little face in my copy of Apocalyptigirl. I found out Brian Hurtt was doing sketches in deluxe copies of The Sixth Gun but I forgot mine.

If you want to know specific prices for anyone let me know. I had no idea going in what was fair or average market prices because I had never done it before, but you get a good idea from walking around the Con for a while.

hey, thanks for the detailed response. i haven't made it to heroes in several years even though i'm close. I either forget it's coming up or end up having to work that weekend. Either way i only tend to go one day, so ahead of time would be more ideal. The one time i looked into it was for sean murphy and stuart immonen. I believe murphy has a website and sets his up ahead of time and immonen doesn't do commisions. I don't specifically remember the price, but seemed worth it if it's a favorite to have some original work in a nice frame or whatever.
