Default Squadron Supreme = Marvel's Authority?

An analogue of an analogue of the JLA. Do you think Squadron Supreme could be Marvel's version of The Authority?

They could be, but I don't think Robinson is the kind of writer to do it. If they wanted the Squadron to be more like the Authority they'd get a more cynical writer (or maybe just get Warren Ellis).

The Authority is a little bit of its time now thanks to all the ripoffs and parodies - including Ellis's self-parody in Nextwave - so I don't know if I can see them going that route.

One alternative approach would be (though I doubt they'll ever try this), instead of making them darker than the Avengers as they usually are, make them more like the original JLA and have them be upright, traditional and old-fashioned. It's probably too late for that though, as the Avengers themselves look to be getting less cynical and dark than they've been for the last few years.

I think they'll have to compete with The Ultimates for that role.

Haven't they been that way for some time in the past?

Why does Warrior Woman's skin color (race?) fluctuate so much?

Apparently this has been the Squadron's line of reasoning since the Gruenwald era (the 80s).

The Squadron was the Authority before the Authority.

Yeah. When it was first announced, I saw a bunch of people call it the new Exiles, cus all the characters were from different dimensions. But tonally, it's definitely giving off a strong Authority vibe. I love the Authority, and DC royally screwed up Stormwatch, (though Midnighter appears to have been saved from awfulness recently) so no complaints from me if Marvel wants to do it right.

From what we've seen of the new Ultimates, not so much. Most of the characters on the Ultimates are not willing to get nasty enough to be really analogous to The Authority. A couple of them, maybe, but....

Yeah Cap was a Dick. Fury was Dirty Enough and We all know Ultimate Reed would fit such an Authority team

For Squadron Supreme to become MU's Authority, they would have to kick the several Avengers and X-Men teams, the Ultimates and A-Force, and I doubt Marvel is going to nerf 90 % of the heroes for Squadron Supreme's benefit...

Nah, the Ultimates will be more like Marvel's JLA. The true heavy hitters all concentrated on one team. Some might say the Avengers were always that, but even early on (especially after Lee brought in Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver) it was more a team of varying power levels and foes.

More like Marvel's Hyperion Avengers team.

Is Marvel's standpoint on diversity disingenuous??

See the original depiction of Warrior Woman in the promo ...

The nose and skin color have changed! What're you doing Marvel?! Respect for diversity and acts of prejudice cannot mix!

Could be they're making yet another Warrior Woman to add a non-black minority (seeing as they already have two). Maybe Native American, seeing as there are so few of them represented in Marvel Comics.

It could also, and more likely be that the art in the Previews book is actually an older version of the same cover, seeing as that stuff has to be sent out in advance for printing. We won't know until the actual comic finally hits stands.
