Another possible inspiration of Batman is The Public Defender (1931) Rich playboy by day...mysterious crime fighter by night!
I love that episode of Batman the Brave and the Bold where they had Batman and Blue Beetle compare notes on their gear.

This guy just looks so beautifully insanely awesome - El Murciélago Humano - The Human Bat
- A mashup of it's time: Batman, Flash Gordon (Hawkmen), The Phantom, and Prince Valiant all mashed up into one.
All while channeling the art of Alex Raymond.

Mason from The Invisibles is a great not-Batman Batman.
And, in bat-comics, I have a soft spot for that nutty killer cop in Max Allan Collins' run who thinks he's Batman and dresses the part.
Patsy Walker on TV! Patsy Walker in new comics! Patsy Walker in your brain! And Jessica Jones is the new Nancy! (Oh, and read the Comics Cube.)
I gott say, without trying to quote it, that page is all kinds of beautiful.
I do love the Batmen of All Nations

Weird, why are characters who obviously predate Batman being mentioned in this Thread?
Characters like Sherlock Holmes, Robin Hood, Arsène Lupin, Fantomas, Juvex, Jumping Jack, The Shadow, The Phantom, Zorro, the Phantom Detective and others of the folclore and European to American Pulp hero/anti-hero genre should be off limits.
In what way is Punisher a "Batman"?
Why?
Bruce Wayne- "...why can't I be Zorro?"
If you are referencing my post, I stated I was switching the OP's "knock off" with inspired off in my post, so you knew for that post I was intentionally approaching it differently.
As to why, it should be obvious; because Batman was not created or appeared in a vacuum, he was somewhat inspired and influenced by ideas, visuals, themes and tropes of a few character types that already existed before him, yet have aspects that are referenced, have crystalized and are recognized in Batman as a somewhat apex of it, and even though they predate him, their ongoing stories continue today.
In that sense they [particularly Zorro] can also be my favorite "not Batman" Batman" .
I hope that makes sense. ; )
