A lot of people look at that way out of context. From the early 70's to late 80's she was in a handful of stories and a good deal of them she had minor roles. By the time of The Killing Joke she was barely active and falling into obscurity. Then she became Oracle and became a fixture of the Bat verse again. In the long run it helped her a lot more than that one moment hurt her.
It would almost be like if in 5 years something similar happened to Cassandra Cain and it brought her back to prominence again in the comics. Yeah that wasn't the intention. But if you were a fab of the character it aw way better than what you were getting the last ten to 15 years.
Certainly. I don't want to minimize Oracle. Because Oracle was an awesome part of the DCU and I do wish that she still had traits of Oracle (something I think they slightly robbed the character of when the gave her back the use of her legs). But let's not pretend that The Killing Joke should get any credit for that. It was two writers making something better out of a terrible situation.
It's like the actual comics part of DC Comics is moving forward in an interesting way (or at least they're trying) while other parts of DC haven't got the memo.
Seriously, could they have chosen a more tone deaf move than adapting The Killing Joke right now?
The Killing Joke is pretty short in comic form but an actual movie would probably be much longer since you'll want to establish Babs as Batgirl too before she gets shot. Maybe show some scenes with the various Joker origins
Those Showcase format shorts are for less popular characters
I have to say the people absolutely against this comic for reasons having nothing to do with quality are surprising. I mean this is a Batman and Joker story before it even gets considered as a Batgirl story.
Its almost like when Batman has horrible things happen to him no one is against it but if a character who exists in the same world as him has something bad happen its just too terrible.

On one hand I sorta really want this story to go away. It doesn't offend me or anything. Its just dated. On the other if they can manage to actually craft it to feel 80s, then it could almost be like a period piece.

"They can be a great people Kal-El, they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all, their capacity for good, I have sent them you. My only son." - Jor-El
Yup, she's a victim of being in the wrong place, at the wrong time. That's life, and it makes what happened to her scarier: the Joker didn't even know who she was, and was gonna shoot anyone that wasn't Jim Gordon opening that door. She's a victim, just like Bruce's parents, just like Jason, just like Dick's parents were, etc.
That part should stay. People love to talk about Barbara's tragedy, and it's tragic, as if something like that shouldn't happen to female characters ever. No, they should overcome horrible things happening to them too. Horrible things happen to everyone, and that includes females.
People dislike what happened to Jason, but it's still a good story, and made a good movie. And that was worse than what happened with Barbara. With Timm at the helm, this has the potential to be great.
