    So I don't know.
Yeah, I love anime, but that article is a big pile of nonsense. There are some good LGBT representations in anime, but they're few and far between.
The idea that Japan is lightyears ahead of the west in that regard is frankly deluded and the author of that piece clearly has some rose-tinted glasses on when it comes to anime.

Having just finished the series, I dont think it is ever mentioned, like, at all. Though I might have just missed it.

Sadly, I found the series to be bloated and over long, and just a cliched and disappointing mess, so i have to admit I tuned out the last few episodes outside of the big moments.

Actually, he technically did say he was something other than straight. When Kate asked if she had ever dated anyone straight, he was one of the people who said "no". Since he is one of the people she has dated, that is him explicitly saying he is not straight.

Agreed, especially the bold. For example, quite a bit of the representation comes from Women Manga writers writing Boy's Love and Shonen-Ai stuff and so on. And not to say that there's something wrong with that on a fundamental level, but there is often-times a bias behind the decision to do so, and it won't guarantee a nuanced portrayal.

This is a major problem in the anime community, where they believe that Japan is so great about tolerance and that anime has all these great gay characters. Don't get me wrong, I do think we have a few things to thank anime for, I do think it was a factor in normalizing the idea of gay relationships in the West, but it was but one of many.

And we do see too many female writers and artists basically using gay relationships to explore their fetishes. I know this because I am one of these women. What I do is fine so long as I remember that it is a fetish, it is basically porn, a fantasy. The issue is when you have people who can't tell the difference between that and real positive representation. We simply need more LGBTQ writers and artists and editors.

Also, freaking Naruto's Orochimaru. Ever since Boruto came out and Orochimaru was "out" as being nonbinary, it's like certain fans have forgotten that Orochimaru was not only a horrific monster and implied pedophile, their gender nonconformity and implied homosexuality were negative traits used to show how weird they were.

Oddly, as the years have gone on, Orochimaru's nonbinary status has actually become something that was used to humanize them. The same for their son, Mitsuki.

And, well, I think western readers of manga tend to really have an outsized view of how mainstream their favorite manga publications are. The format as a whole is very mainstream, but a lot of the stuff with queer content is very niche. Even if its a big seller, it's often still seen as being part of a atypical sub-culture. Makes me think of how many Western manga/anime fans would label themselves quite willingly as otaku, not understanding that its very much a derogatory term.

Historically, Japan's attitudes towards homosexuality have been... well, not one to one with the Western. Which is to say, from what I have been taught, demonization of specifically male homosexuality there actually derived from Western influence, but, it was largely sanctioned only under the circumstances of a man having an affair outside a hetero marriage. From what I understand, that's more or less how it is nowadays as well, a sort of don't-ask-don't-tell scenario where as long as you're still carrying on the bloodline and not making public waves, people won't give you much trouble. You can see a very, very early example of this pop up subtly way back in the Tale of Genji, which is 1000 years old, and a good modern example is the author/actor/model/nationalist leader Mishima Yukio. I think women have been out of luck all the way through though.

I should note that I'm far from an expert on the subject, and only really know what's come up in relation to my studies of Japanese literature, primarily pre-modern and modern, not contemporary.

To fair be that's a problem with girl's manga, even the most famous ones have issues with toxic relationships in general.

Oliver Coipel, god amongst men, did a really cool piece for Pride. Dauterman and Coipel, best in the business, are also gay. Is it a
    coincidence? No. No, it’s not.

I never knew if he was referring to Speed or Hercules, but probably Speed since Alonso doused him in bi-bye juice.

Williams' twitter is typically gayer than her books unfortunately

    Entirely Marvel's fault no doubt.

I don’t want to promise anything but there might be confirmation inside the book but idk. It would be cool if there was on-panel stuff for her.
