We saw in one of her visions in X-Treme X-Men that her village (mentioned to be in Balkans) was attacked by mercenaries. She was probably caught and sold into some guy's harem in Afghanistan (she mentioned that she escaped from a harem as a kid) so there you have it.

Was there really a wasted oppurtunity? They dont know her and I dont think she really would have added much to their story arc

I don't remember her being used for any storyline at that time, so I would've been happy to see her show up and be involved in some ways.

It would also be good to see a bit more of her bitterness towards Xavier. As Claremont wrote her in X-Treme X-Men, she wasn't all that happy with him for sending her to the Hellfire Club.
