    That'd be a cool poster.

I don't know if you read Avengers Academy with Korvac, but Robbie was the only one who was able to really hurt him. That's pretty badass.

Wait a minute. Speedball was considered too be as tough as Hulk?

Yes. In the pages of Thunderbolts, Moonstone convinced Norman Osborn to allow Speedball/Penance to live, so they could take advantage of his immense power which was described on more than one occasion as being "Hulk-level" or "Hulk-class".

    That's some seriously big power.

So how exactly do Speedball's powers work? I never really understood that.

So what does everyone think of our new Supporting characters Jake Waffles and Mister Whiskers?

Speedball generates and is surrounded by a kinetic energy field that envelops him and manifests in the form of glowing energy bubbles. This field absorbs and redirects kinetic (physical) energy at twice the speed of impact. This means that every time Speedball collides with a solid surface, he bounces away at twice the speed, thereby exponentially growing his speed and velocity with each impact. Likewise, if an object or aggressor hits Speedball, one of them is going to fly away in the opposite direction at twice the speed of impact. A good example of this was one time when Speedball built up velocity by bouncing around in a concrete construction pipe before launching at and colliding with the Juggernaut. The power of the impact was so great that the 'Unstoppable' Juggernaut was sent flying several city blocks away.

Speedball's kinetic field is so effective at absorbing kinetic energy that he feels no pain during impact and is basically invulnerable to physical harm. Thanks to Civil War and Civil War: Frontline, we know that he is capable of surviving a nuclear bomb blast while standing at the point of explosion.

In the pages of New Warriors Volume 1 we saw Robbie begin to experiment in the control of his kinetic powers. He has been shown directing his kinetic force field outward to shield allies or repel enemies attacks, channeling kinetic energy into his fists for kinetic powered punches and even using his kinetic energy bubbles as projectile weapons, controlling them and shooting them like a barrage of bullets at his foes.

During his time as Penance, his kinetic field mutated in behavior and he began to generate kinetic energy as a response to pain. In this form he was able to store up the kinetic energy and unleash at a time of his choosing rather than immediately redirecting the energy and bouncing or repelling away. The more pain he endured, the more energy was generated and stored. He would often release this pent up energy in the form of kinetic energy blasts channeled from his hands. The blasts often appeared as arcing electricity which he would direct toward his targets. He could wrap himself in kinetic energy, effectively creating a sphere of energy distortion around himself that allowed him to levitate and, when he desired, he could channel that sphere either forward or in an Omni-directional attack that was extremely powerful and had been shown to level city blocks, send attackers through buildings and even survive an all out attack from Doctor Dooms latverian arsenal and warp Doom's armor in the process. Again, the more pain his enemies sent his way, the more the kinetic energy was fed and then redirected exponentially back at them.

In the new volume of the New Warriors, it has been revealed that Speedball has reclaimed his original Speedball powers AND retained his Penance powers as well, making him an epic level threat. Whether his Penance powers are still triggered by pain is up for debate, but hopefully we will get the answers to that in the upcoming issues of the book.

So is it just me or did Jake Waffles look more like a fox than a dog in one of the last few issues?

While I've known quite a few dogs that looked like foxes, yes, he went from looking hound-like (Beagle? McGruff?) to something else.

It's actually been established that his penance powers are still fueled by pain in Avengers Academy. He can store it for long periods, however, so he doesn't need that suit.

Also, just curious, was it established the exact nature of his penance powers beyond 'uber tough blasts' and fueled by pain? Because I remember in the Civil War Frontline thing, it was implied he was absorbing all nearby energy (hence how She-Hulk was hurt)

Hmm... I'll have to read through Frontline again to take a look at that.
