Of course. It makes the history and progression of the Captain Marvel name from Mar-Vell to Carol easier and far less problematic than what happened in the comics. They won't have to explain that the name was Monica's at one point before it was ever Carol's, or how Monica lost it after getting her butt kicked by a white man -- cloned progeny or not -- against the backdrop of the #metoo era. And they won't have to further reveal that even though Carol had been an Avenger for years before Monica made the scene, it was Monica who was the first between the two to lead the Avengers with distinction. So sure, so that Carol can shine and the audience can appreciate a more palatable origin, let's remove Monica as a contemporary. After all, Manifest Destiny holds that you never have to explain what happened to the indigenous peoples that were in the way.
