Of course. It makes the history and progression of the Captain Marvel name from Mar-Vell to Carol easier and far less problematic than what happened in the comics. They won't have to explain that the name was Monica's at one point before it was ever Carol's, or how Monica lost it after getting her butt kicked by a white man -- cloned progeny or not -- against the backdrop of the #metoo era. And they won't have to further reveal that even though Carol had been an Avenger for years before Monica made the scene, it was Monica who was the first between the two to lead the Avengers with distinction. So sure, so that Carol can shine and the audience can appreciate a more palatable origin, let's remove Monica as a contemporary. After all, Manifest Destiny holds that you never have to explain what happened to the indigenous peoples that were in the way.

I just realized that not only is Carol Marvel's Hal Jordan--this debate is Marvel's Hal vs John Stewart!

Well, you're not wrong that just like every other single last comicbook movie, it doesn't have to deal with all the dumb crap that clutters up comicbook continuity...

I do think that there will not be any other Captain Marvel before Carol in the MCU. She'll be the first, the one and only Captain Marvel.
There might be a dude by name of Mar-Vell who holds an equicalent rank of captain in the Kree military, but if so, I doubt he's getting a superhero name.

Monica isn't indigenous or genocided or actually real. Very poor choice of words.

Now that I've seen the first trailer for the Captain Marvel movie, well, what's the word for it, ummm...

I'm thinking this was in Avengers Spotlight, circa 1994 or thereabouts.

Judicator mentioned she lost the Captain Marvel because she got beat up by a white dude.

Genis and Monica meet in Avengers Unplugged #5 and she hands over the name in the end. I found some synopses but they don't mention them fighting.

I think she was being controlled by the controller at the time, and he beat her by freeing her from control by damaging the control disc. Or something like that. It's been awhile.

Monica was controlled by the Controller and actually beat Genis in that issue by controlling the energy inside of his naga-band field.

She was later saved by the Vision, who removed the control chip from her skull.

it's way past time for Monica to have a solo space adventure far into other galaxies.
