Default J.C. Penney employee sent home for wearing shorts she bought — at J.C. Penney

This is a national news story or at least it is facebook trending. Some will say it is part of the war on women. I say it is part of the war on stupid. Who shows up to work in a retail clothing store dressed like that? Yes she looks cute. No she doesn't look like she is showing to much but that is not an outfit fit for work.

This is the epitome of a nonstory. If the store had a dress code and the shorts violated it, it doesn't matter where she bought them. As for her not learning about the dress code in orientation . . . did they give her an employee manual at orientation? If so, did she actually read it? If not, then bad on her. As for the idea that workplace dress codes "are "too harsh on" and "target" women . . . . bullshit. I've worked in several professional, corporate offices and in every one of them women had more leeway in what they could wear than men.

And I find it hilarious that she's talking about how she's "fed up with dress codes that target women." She's 17 years old and working at JC Penny! What does she know about corporate culture? Clearly not too much, if her response the first time her boss told her to do something she didn't agree with was to "quit on the spot."

    Seriously little girl, grow up.

When I went to high school, you couldn't wear shorts.. this was in the 80s but mostly due to one adminstrator who had a throwback '50s mentality.

more OT those shorts don't look appropriate for work. I doubt a guy could show up in those shorts either. I'm sure JC Penny sells swimwear, would she show up in a bikini and think that's OK.

Some are assuming the wording of the story is that she bought them in the career section. I am not sure that she bought them in the career section but that that is the department she works in and the shorts are inPpropriate for that department.

And for the reccord I dont want to see tween or teen girls in booty shorts anymore than I want to see 20 something cut guys walking with their shirts off. Or fat guys either.

Shorts AND sandals? Other than Hooter's, I can't think of any retailer that allows women to dress like that. That twit deserved getting reprimanded.

As someone already said this is a nonstory. I used to work retail at a department store that was similar to a JC Penny and neither the men nor the woman were allowed to wear shorts. Point of fact we were all required to be "professionally attired" which for the ladies meant either dresses or slacks (or a skirt) with a dress shirt or sweater. Guys wore slacks, a dress shirt and a tie with or without a suit coat depending on what department you worked in. She probably didn't read the employee manual or she wasn't listening in orientation about the dress code and like a lot of people she wants to blame everyone else but herself for being reprimanded.

hardly matters where they were from, they sell underwear too, does that mean workers can turn up in underwear.

Not sure how these stories get so much attention. They have a dress code, she violated it.

Never set foot in a Hooters but, having worked in food service, I'm pretty sure it's a health/safety code violation for food service employees to wear sandals.

The "story" demonstrates what happens when you need endless content to fill time/space. This junk passes for news. Pure and simple; just because the fashion industry labels clothing as "career" doesn't mean it is appropriate for the workplace. Department stores market such items based on fashion labels, depending on the demographics. I can tell you from experience, the bulk of the "career" clothing at Pennys is of the traditional variety. Meanwhile, they both have an employee handbook with dress code well defined, as well as visual guides to what is and isn't appropriate.

More than likely, this was a commercially motivated "story", fostered by a competitor or by someone with a vested interest in a competitor.

    Default Shorts are not perfect

First of all the if the superior doesn't like it then he/she would have warned the employees before and it also and employee's responsibility to wear proper clothes because a booty short is not that formal at all.

What else would people do at work on the internet? Watching too much pornography is said to be mentally unhealthy. And unfortunately blocked by most employers.
