Also, it's been quite a few years since I've read Curse of Capistrano, but I don't believe pulp Zorro is as skilled as his later incarnations. In his first appearance, when he goes to teach Sgt. Garcia a lesson, he holds the entire tavern at gunpoint warning them not to interfere as they have their swordfight. Orginal Diego didn't strike me as being capable of taking on 10-12 guys with a sword and whip and overpowering them all without causing any serious harm as he would decades later.
