Smog Monster was probably one of the weirdest Godzilla films. Really silly and extremely 70's, but also it has some fairly horrifying stuff in it too.

The monster in the kid's imagination was Minya, Godzuki was only in the cartoon. And Minya was only imaginary in that one movie, in his other appearance in Son of Godzilla he's real.

I don't think any monster takes a side in the upcoming movie I belive they are all territorial with their own interests.

Godzilla seems to go after other rival predators. Perhaps he has a history with King Ghidorah as he did with the MUTO Prime (see the canon Godzilla comics and prequel info)

I'm thinking there might not be "sides" - just that they're all vying for dominance, and the others will fall in line behind the alpha. (except maybe Mothra, who usually is much more people friendly)

Godzilla was firmly children's entertainment by that point, and they ended up adding a lot of silly stuff to Godzilla vs. Hedorah because they realized the movie was turning out super grim and they added stuff like Godzilla flying to try to balance it out!

Yep. This was mentioned in one of the trailers as the other kaiju responding to King G (alpha), and them asking is there another to challenge? Then we get Godz rising from the ocean on cue.

Hope this lives up to the hype and we get mostly monsters unlike that mediocre 2014 film
