    Default Red Hood/Arsenal #3 Preview/Discussion

    http://uproxx.com/gammasquad/2015/08...hoodarsenal/7/

I've said it before but I LOVE Medri's work

And just look at that variant cover

    A hing of beauty.

Now on the preview itself, is amazing to see Lobdell slowly adressing issues peope has had with the series while at the same time the boys grow as characters, all of that while keeping a great balance with the humor.

Really looking forward for this issue.

    I loved the Billboard.

And Jason seems to honor his partnership. Wonder when we'll get some short story arcs?

Tony Daniel levels of stretching out panels for splash pages.

Mostly because too many splash panels mean less meaningful panels/development. Plus its kinda like a gimmick that could wear out its welcome if used too much.

The second splash page has a lot of meaning and both Jason and Roy's attitude tell a lot of the situation though.

Granted and it is a preview. I forget, were there splash pages in RHaA issue 1? Maybe Lobdell is getting people indifferent to splash pages. I mean if it's used for character meaning/plot moving then it should be fine.

Maybe that's why Gordon's coming in later.

    Gordon!Batman: "COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT!"

I went back to check and so far there have been:

    - Two on the Sneak Peek

    -One on issue one

    -Two on issue two.

Are you familiar with Medri's work?

He does a lot of pinups so splash pages like those are where his art truly shines.

As you can see he puts a lot of detail on his backgrounds and the action is always fluid with very kinetic characters

That's a nice variant cover there. I'm gonna have to get a hold of that one. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the issue and can't wait to see what hijinks the two of them get into this time. I didn't actually read the preview but I really loved that billboard. It made me laugh.

Yeah it's very noticeable when there is a lot of "blank" space, like you'd see in Superman/Wonder Woman when Tony Daniel was drawing, or in this preview. A lot of these bigger panels could have easily been compressed without losing anything. Sometimes, it comes down to the artist not adding enough to the visual narrative (see: Manapul or JH Williams for artists who are very good at making use the full page). Sometimes, it's just the writer not providing enough content or direction in the script notes.

Personally, I don't have a problem with splash pages myself. There are times when the best way to do something visually is through one and I don't see anything wrong with that. Medri seems to favor them I suppose but I find them to be one of the least offensive artistic ticks out there. It certainly beats minimalist backgrounds were buildings are simple rectangles with no detail and background characters faces are empty circles with no features at all or a half a dozen other things I could think of that bother me about some artist's work, specially most of the other artists that were on this book's predecessor after Rocafort left the book.
