The idea if what you wanted was the white family that has been depicted for the last five decades (the "source material") in the comics as the source for the movie, you get called on one end, an out of touch get of my lawn fogey.... Or at the other end a racist resistant to change. Both of which can be very, very wrong. MPJ casting wasn't bad in an of itself, but it was part of the perception that "this is not the FF". And yeah, you're gonna say "You already got that family ten years ago". But guess what? Which version was more financially successful?

Nerd Power...lol. No just a really bad movie. No different from Jupiter Ascending or any other of the crap movies that bomb. The trailers were boring. The movies just look dull. The Thing look like he was made by KFC.

Also hate to break it to "Nerd Power" but Guardians was nothing like the DNA comic except "I am Groot".So "respect for the source material" is just silly garbage.

Fantastic 4 only made 11.3 million on Friday, that puts it on track to make roughly half of what Antman made it's opening weekend, which would put it in the neighborhood of around 27 million, it's bombing, and it's bombing hard

That's why they were hits. It's that simple. Maybe some folks on the internet don't like them but majority of the general audiences and critics did.

Wolverine Origins on the other hand didn't get good reviews but still made money. ASM didn't get good reviews and disappointed.

The through line here is: make a movie that audiences and critics like and they are generally successful (with the exception of Wolverine Origins). Make a movie that everyone hates and see it fall apart.
This is the correct answer. I confess I really liked Dark World. I was entertained. That's what mattered. And you are also correct about IM2 & 3. IM2 was not liked as much as IM 1 by the critics but I can point the other guy to a lot of positive reviews, Roger Ebert's for one
And here's one for Iron Man 3 from Sight and Sound magazine

I purposely avoided internet bloggers and just picked reviews from the news media or a magazine.

Hate to break it to you but the GOTG hasn't been true to the source since the 70s. And too many crap movies become hits because something in them is recognizable to fans.

Newsflash "White" doesn't just mean Anglo-Saxon at least not globally.

Ah well, Evans mother maiden name is Capuano (an italian name) and Alba's mother is a white woman. So yeah, Evans has some latin blood (latin, not latino but..) and Alba has some ancestors in Danemark.

Star Trek. Definite complaints from Trekkies about "Not Getting It Right", but the general look (RGB color uniforms, mini skirts and go go boots) Easter Eggs (Leonard Nimoy) override complaints about shaky cams, lens flare and "Why did they do Wrath of Kahn again"? Love 'em or hate 'em the movies have enough "Trek" in them to be a hit.

Putting aside the fact that there's nothing even approaching a general consensus that those movies were "crap" (okay, Transformers maybe) . . . A list of movie names isn't actual evidence that the movies were only successful "because something in them is recognizable to fans" if for no other reason than because, in order for them to be successful, they would have had to be seen by many more people who weren't "fans" than who were. The idea that Star Trek, Transformers, or X-Men were successful solely, or even primarily, due to the patronage of "fans" is something that only fans themselves--with their myopic, self-entitled, we-are-the-world view--would think.

You understand how the X-Men are perceived differently than the Avengers are, right?

It's one of the reasons I like the two franchises being separate, one group of super powered individuals being embraced by the public while a separate group of similarly powered individuals being reviled has always struck me as a bit silly

Sorry that's total crap. Your Movie is failing for the very reasons fans have been giving for what? The better part of a year? If "fans don't matter" then neither should Comic-Con yet the studios seem to think so, (Even to do damage control). You think buzz doesn't matter, that word of mouth doesn't matter? The only way for Fan-4-stic to have been a hit was to be a truly good movie that would overcome negative buzz by guess what? Positive fan reaction. Your movie was DOA. It had nothing for the casual fans, the hardcore or the general public.
