I watched Snowpiercer and enjoyed it.
Just saw Mockingjay Part 2. I really enjoyed it alot.
Some friends of mine have been watching a Star Wars movie a week to get ready for Force Awakens, this week was the original cut of the original Star Wars. (someone got a bootleg)
It's just so much better paced than the prequels were (which we'd watched over the last 3 weeks) the characters have more energy and the story just goes and doesn't let up. I don't hate the prequels but we definitely were joking the whole time thru them like Mystery Science Theater whereas there were some joking during the first Star Wars that's now #4 but mostly just people sitting and enjoying the whole thing.
One thing I noticed about Phantom Menace, someone at the showing we had brought up the "Phantom Edit" that I guess cuts out most of Jar Jar Binks and one of my friends wondered how that would work, while watching the movie I noticed just how isolated Jar-Jar's schtick was from the story and even the other characters. You really could cut Jar Jar out for the most part and not even change the scene. I didn't realize how tacked on he seemed.
Double bill
The Big Country: 5/5. Peck, Simmons, Heston, Conners, and an incredible Burl Ives. Great western.
Bullitt: 4.5/5. Still one of the greatest car chases in history, Bisset is jaw-droppingly beautiful, McQueen is cool as ice, but it doesn't quite stick the landing. The end kind of just comes to an abrupt halt.
American Sniper. It was good, but not great.I think they were trying for a respectful portrait of Kyle and not a comment, pro or con,on the Iraq War. You can see it as a movie about how service men acted heroically, but should never have been there in the first place.
I also thought it got a little "war movie" at times, as opposed to a realistic approach to the fighting.
American Sniper was ok - not as complex as the superior Munich with similar subject matter.
I saw Spectre - thought it was ok - great acting as usual from Christoph Waltz. Expected to see much more of Monica Bellucci. As far as 007 goes it was more of the same ( and yes I also thought Skyfall was good but over rated - For me Casino Royale is the best of the James Blond series). Will give Spectre 3 out of 5 stars.
Also saw Sin City - A Dame to Kill for at home. Not a Miller fan but these movies have been visually exquisite and the stories well told with excellent casts. Will give it 3.5 out of 5 stars.
I saw The New Hunger Games film two nights ago. I thought it was very good and the best of the series.Satisfying ending.
Just saw that Sin City like last week for the first time. After seeing it I'm not really sure why critics bitched about it like they did. It's not as good as the first movie, the voice over is over written this go around, but when it works it's nice. And even if it's more of the same, it's not like we were getting hyper stylized noir stories between the Sin City movies. Marv felt shoehorned into the movie, the Dwight story was best when it was following Green, (the story could have lost some fat) and the Joseph Gordon-Levitt one seemed like it was all around the best one.
Creed. It is good
"Citizen Ruth" with Laura Dern. Abortion comedy, had some funny bits. Alexander Payne ("Election") directed, streaming on Netflix.
Watched 'Planes, Trains & Automobiles' for the first time in a few years earlier tonight on Sky Movies on Demand.
Probably John Candy's finest hour.
HEY KIDS, (BUY MY) COMICS!! https://www.mythworldemedia.com/store
Watched Before Midnight - thought it was bit self-indulgent on Linklater's part but still 3 out of 5 stars. Couldn't remember Before Sunrise and Before Sunset all that well. Have yet to watch Boyhood.
