Watched this on Netflix a few weeks back, and was really disappointed by the whole thing. Everyone in the cast is good, but it just seemed like average indie comedy; after all the glowing reviews for it, I was really expecting far more. It was like subpar The Savages, Little Miss Sunshine, Sunshine Cleaning, or The Squid and the Whale. Once it was over, I wasn't really sure why critics seemed to do crazy for it. I watched Seeking a Friend for the End of the World right after that, and it turned out to be way better movie.

Anyways, that was a few weeks ago. The last movie I watched today was Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart at the River Styx. It's not as good as Sword of Vengeance, but that's really no slight, as it's still good. Best scene in the movie is probably when one of the main villains sics her band of female assassins on a poor ninja. Poor ninja didn't know what was coming.

Ended up doing a double-bill with my two other friends.

The Walk - Still amazing to watch on IMAX 3D

The Martian - After the last few Ridley Scott movies, I thought he was just not capable of making a good movie. Visually, his movies look stunning. But man, can they be a mess. This one, was absolutely phenomenal. I cannot wait to re-visit it again.

Just rewatched Southland Tales, the absurdist political allegory from the director of Donnie Darko.

It really reminds me of Scott Pilgrim, the confluence of styles and bizarreness, I found I really needed to digest it and weigh everything I'd seen before rendering a judgment.

The humour is really hit or miss and sometimes poorly placed.
But the film does play with some cool ideas, how omnipotence is presented with the Rocks character, the whole idea of the memory gospel, the alternative idea of what the bush era politics of fear might've lead to, concepts about the applications of alternative energy sources.

But after a few years, finally rewatching the ending, I had a realization about the ending. The movie makes reference to only God could stop the apocalypse, also makes inderect reference to what both the Rock and Seann William Scott have become as a result of the temporal, dimensional entanglement.
They posit a no win scenario with both versions of Scotts character, the fall will kill them from not sustaining the rift, the rift will conceivably kill everything.
But the Rock and Timberlake both make reference to the idea that he won't commit suicide.
When both versions of Scotts character are present, their eyes are different colors, and the final shot of not-mortally-wounded Scott shows an energy pass over him as one of his eyes iris' now match his doppelganger. Given the nature of what happened in the film, two identical beings from different temporal points meeting and the idea earlier in the film of their bodies processing energy differently as a result, I'm lead to believe Scotts character has in essence become God and will intervene as the only one capable of reversing the deceleration and ending the apocalypse.

So, enjoyed the rewatch, but it is a film you need to be prepared to take as is, as some of the absurdity detracts from it overall (and if i recall correctly, a sizeable amount of footage was cut for time)

I tried to watch Aloha the other night because my GF wanted to see it because of the cast. Probably the worst movie I have seen in a long time. We could not even finish watching it because it was just so stupid. With the likes of Bill Murry, Emma Stone, and Bradley Cooper on top of a great supporting cast how they made such an epic failure of a movie is beyond me.

    Goodnight Mommy

My friend showed me this last night. I loved the pacing and how minimal and realistic everything was. The story left me with questions and I had to go to the internet to see what people thought. I love movies like this.

Haven't watched this trailer yet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kXpUaQpXMA

    Blow- 2.5/5

The first hour and a half was filled with some of the most stupid, pointless scenes and dialogue I've seen in a while. But the last 30 minutes was actually pretty touching, with the scenes with Depp and his daughter. Still would not recommend.

Finally saw Pacific Rim last night. I wasn't expecting Charlie Day to be in the film. Overall it was pretty enjoyable, but I'm not sure how a sequel would work given how the movie ended. I hope Ron Perlman is in the sequel though.

The characters played by Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, and Clifton Collins, Jr. were the highlights of the film for me. Some parts of the movie reminded me of the Matrix, and Clifton's character reminded me of Tank from the first Matrix.

One of my least favorite movies ever. I remember when it was free on OnDemand in May of 2014 I was so excited to watch it based on its good reviews and its featuring Idris Elba, one of my favorite actors. But then I saw it and was completely disgusted. 0.5/5 stars

How come you were completely disgusted by it? Also, Pacific Rim is the first film I've seen with Idris Elba, and I thought his role had the most impact in the whole movie. He seemed kind of like a heartless jerk to me in the beginning, but he really commanded attention and respect from the people who worked under him, and showed he genuinely cared about his colleagues and the human race in general.

I don't remember a lot of it so I can't say for sure exactly what I didn't like, but I just thought it was a lot of stupid violence between the monsters

As far as giant monster vs robot fights go, it was pretty mindless and most of the time it was hard for me to understand what the heck was going on and why it was happening, but I really liked the human character relationships and how characters developed throughout the movie when they weren't fighting monsters. Most of those monsters looked pretty nightmarish and disturbing too... I wouldn't mind seeing a movie with these same human characters, but in a setting that doesn't involve catastrophic demonic monstrosities from the center of the planet.

Probably would have been better if it was a lot of stupid violence between monsters. It's not often you get to see that in giant monster movies, Pacific Rim isn't even violence. To be completely disgusted by Pacific Rim sounds like a hilarious overreaction to something...whatever the hell that something could be. What are the quality films your watching for it to be one of your least favorite movies ever? Can't imagine someone that's seen many movies having such a reaction to a giant monster movie with some nice giant monster fights. Imagine your reaction to crappy giant monster movies?

Loved The Martian. Was really surprised with the characters in this, Ridley Scott is usually so detached when it comes to his character, but not here.

Well movies are subjective, so it's hard to knock me disliking the movie. My three least favorite movies are Click, Batman and Robin, and Pacific Rim, if you wanted some reference

-Saw Black Mass with Johnny Depp.

It was OK. I liked maybe three scenes in the movie but overall it was an average movie of the life of a criminal. We have seen this type of story before, nothing was really new or groundbreaking.

After the movie, I read the story of this guy on Wikipedia and his life story was much more interesting than what we saw on screen. They left so much stuff out, it's unbelievable. Hell they didn't even show what Whitey's line-of-work was in the criminal underworld. So as a spectator you were completely left out of loop. Yet the way they described what he was doing on Wiki was so interesting to me, that he was mainly a guy that was shaking people down for money. That's all he was doing but he was great at it. He wasn't dealing in drugs but was scaring drug dealers in giving him % of their profits. I like that he was a specialist at one thing but they never covered this in the movie.

    --------

The Green Inferno: Eli Roth is at it again. Some good parts but I guess I was numb of the whole carnage stuff, it left me cold. I wasn't scared or shocked whatever. I think the guy is just bad at creating tension.
