Question about IDW's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

I don't want any spoilers but I want to know if it is safe toget into this series. Does it rely on any other knowledge besides itself to enjoy it? Is it a continuation of any other series? Or is it it's own continuity. Are all of the issues contained in the trades in order. I remember when I wanted to read dark horses star wars series it skipped issues in the trades and that really pissed me off.
