If Dan REALLY meant that, why did he give Peter a company, access to fight crime around the world, and more money than Peter knows what to do with? Sounds like a kicked football to me.

I've been both a Peanuts fan and a Spidey fan for as far back as I can remember.

EDIT: For what it's worth, I'm not so sure this was actually done by Shulz, mostly because the second and third panels in the football cartoon don't strike me as his normal depictions of the characters.
