James Arthur Madrox, more popularly know as Multiple Man, can create duplicates of himself. He was a member of X-factor and eventually became a leader.
Let's appreciate the coolest X-men character!
And please let me know if you're a huge Multiple Man fan so i can add your username to this first post. :-)
Multiple Man fans:
1. RLAAMJR.
Ooh, hard to believe that Jamie didn't already have an appreciation thread!
I love multiplication/duplication powers, and Jamie is the gold standard. (Even Triplicate Girl, the first comic book duplicator, AFAIK, designed in 1961, has relatively recently become a 'Duplicate Girl,' able to make dozens of dupes. Multiplex, another DC duplicator created multiple smaller duplicates, as his mass remained the same, until, surprise!, he also changed to be more like Jamie and able to make multiple full-sized dupes! Everybody wants to be more like Jamie!)
I wasn't always a fan of his powers wonkiness, or the seemingly endless changes to them (now he absorbs energy and can grow larger!, first he's got a telepathic link with his dupes and they are all extensions of his own will, but now they are all kind of free willed, and he has no idea what's going on with them unless they merge and he gains their memories), but the basic idea was amazing.
"A guy who can turn into a bunch of guys? Ooh, scary." a mob enforcer quips (before Jamie kills him...). The Madrox limited series is one of my favorite character-based limited mini-series of all time.
And yeah, he's dead again, killed in the latest X-event, as he was by the legacy virus, so long ago, by a writer who did not know or care that he had an X on his face or that he lived 10,000 miles away from Muir island with a wife who can (occasionally) see the future and would have kept him away from Muir island.
But Cyclops and Wolverine and Jean and Xavier are all dead, too, and they'll all be back, eventually. As will Jamie, who has a 'get out of death free' card in that when he does die, no matter how many people confidently proclaim that 'this was the real Jamie, and not a dupe!', it always seems to have been a dupe, in the end...
I love that Jamie is kind of a flawed hero. Nobody really holds him to the standard that they hold Cyclops. As a leader? He got by, barely. As a detective? *Rictor* was better at his official job than he was. And that's okay. Jamie's the everyman. He can (potentially) to everything, and be everywhere, but will never be as good as the world's best detective, or the world's best martial artist, or the world's best anything, because he's got a million directions he can go (and has gone), and, to quote Wolverine, he's got 'four liters of brain juice squeezed into a two liter jug.'
The potential of him ganging up on people, or learning multiple things and then absorbing them all into his core self, has been explored pretty well, but there are still directions that could be explored, such as the notion that there are still duplicates of him out there, living their lives (such as the one that is a priest, Father Maddox), who could be tapped as resources. Are there some of him working in the government? In law enforcement? Overseas, in diplomacy? In the military? Architects? Bankers? Professional locksmiths? Security guards? IT specialists? Anywhere one could possibly need to go for a mission, there could be a Maddox dupe there, living his life, and able to provide a key to the back door, or a place to hide out, or some expert advice, or just the loan of a car...
There are a few plot seeds that have never really been explored, either, such as the nature of the character Clay, from the mini-series, or the nature of 'cropkills,' mutants like Jamie (and Hank McCoy, and Kurt Wagner) born with their mutation already expressed, unlike most mutants, who come into their powers at puberty.
So much potential!
I hope that when Multiple Man is alive again, he gets his own ongoing solo. Marvel should think that Naruto is a successful manga and both Naruto and Multiple Man have duplication abilities.
I hope Madrox returns with no explanation, just everybody being confused and then two issues in he just turns and goes "Really? You thought that was me on Muir Island?! That dupe didn't even have an M on it's face!"
Current Pull: Amazing Spider-Man and Domino
Bunn for Deadpool's Main Book!
I started reading X-Factor on a whim a few months back, and instantly fell in love with Madrox. I would say his one of, if not, my favorite male Marvel character. His powers are great, but what I love most is his personality. His got a great wit, and his the type of guy who you just cannot help but like. His not perfect, but he tries to do the best thing. Peter David did a fantastic job in the book.
It was a disappointment to then go on and read his death in DoX. I mean, its like they never even tried. He basically gets no explanation as to why he was doing what he was, just pops up to say "Hay, I am not a copy!' and then dies. I cannot wait until this is shown to be false..
I very much agree!
Wish marvel comics offered a project to artist Larry Stroman such a to me GREAT talent!
I love Jaime. He was great in the cartoon and I loved 90 xfacter. His death sucked so hope it's rectified sooner then later. Totally a fan
