The real problem with Wildcats these days is no one knows what to do with them. The whole 'fighting secret aliens' thing is cliche these days on it's face, and nothing's replaced that concept yet.
Joe Casey came close, maybe, but his ideas robbed the series of tension (His stories in a nutshell: Grifter gets in situation. Grifter screws up. Spartan teleports and solves everything. That was his entire damn run!), and come across as boring (rightfully so)
As much as DC's screwed the pooch when it comes to their own concepts (see Lobo), they're not the cause of the Wildcat's troubles, per say. The Wildcats are. Until they have a reason to exist as a team, they won't, nor should they.
So the question really is, what's their cause now?
