Silver Surfer images party ? Collection porn ? OK, I'm in... Love your images - and the commentaries...

Among the artists, painters LOVE the Surfer ! Only covers follow, but without any title. It's better for the eyes.

    Alex Ross Marvels

Esad Ribic Silver Surfer Requiem (Marvel Knights)

Gabrielle Dell'Otto Portfolio Galaxy (Original Sin variant) -

I've got only the TPB for the first two, but the last image made me buy Galaxy. Who can resist to that ! Two European guys on the list btw. Next : The KING ! Need to scan some Kirby's stuffs... Later.

Finally no more scans today. Tired. And, more important, I think that this thread needs more regular updates to stay more visible. "Silverado" deserves it absolutely. So I will work later.

The point of the post is the very good surprise to see this in my LCS :

    What's in it ? (from http://www.previewsworld.com/Catalog/AUG150913 )

"The sentinel of the spaceways soars again! After years trapped on Earth, the Silver Surfer finally breaks free of Galactus's barrier and returns to the stars. His full Power Cosmic restored, he heads for Zenn-La. But the old saying holds true: You can't go home again. While the age-old war between the Kree and the Skrulls heats up once again, the Elders of the Universe target Galactus! But love is the greatest force of all. Will Surfer find it with his old flame, Shalla-Bal? With Galactus's herald Nova? Or with the Celestial Madonna, Mantis? Plus: the origin of Galactus and more! Collecting SILVER SURFER (1982) #1, SILVER SURFER (1987) #1-14, SUPER-VILLAIN CLASSICS, and material from EPIC ILLUSTRATED #1 and MARVEL FANFARE (1982) #51."

Next time I'll pass by I will feel less stupid... So many covers reminded me anything... SHAME ON ME !... Happily I think that a few of them are in the book that a good coincidence has just led in my hands !

Its strange that they didnt make an epic collection containing Silver Surfer vol 1. #1-18. They just skipped it and started with vol. 3.

I have the essential tpb but what like a new edition in color.

The Buscema's run ? There is already the TPB edition of two Marvel Masterworks - less expensive than the HC which are probably sold out, IDK. I think you can find them easily : in each of my LCS they are present. They are in color.

Their strategy with the Epic collection is not to follow the chronological order but very often to publish things sold-out or not collected yet. Thus the holes in the line, evident if you slook at the volume numbers. It's a deliberated and explicitly expressed strategy btw : there are a few words explaining that at the back of each Epic book.

This volume is the number 3 (1980-1990). I guess that "WHEN CALLS GALACTUS" is the volume 2. When the two MMW TPB will be sold out I guess they will reunite them in the volume 1.

I like the Collection format but I will not buy it.... Mainly due to the fact that I have in my own personal collection (not counting my father's) each and every issue of the Silver Surfer ever!

I also have about 90% of all his appearances in other books as well

I like that they made this though...hopefully it will bring more love for the most powerful Marvel hero ever!

Wow ! The Collection format is cool for guys like me who haven't got your Cosmic Comics Powers, Mantis Girl 94. I've just noticed, checking the 1st page to get some recommendations, that you're the one who started this thread... Impressive... Norrin deserves such a place in the forum. Another Hidden Realm : El Silverado ? Let it shine !

I love the current series btw, at my own surprise ! And I don't buy much Marvel...So clever, so fun, so beautiful...So simple and so complex... Perfect. Of course I speak Space French and grew up with Jean Giraud / Moebius, and it helped !

I really hope that it will still be that good in the ANAD Marvel... In fact I voted for Dawn in the 50 Greatest Marvel Characters of all time - and for Galactus and Victor of course... (IIRC ranked respectively 10, 2 and 1). Norrin was in the list too, but I don't remember how high.

Talking about Victor, I hope that this thread is friendly with the Latverians like me ! I'm an honorary Atlantean also, I guess it could help... The Surfer is Cosmic like Namor is Aquatic and I've met both of them when Jack and Stan sent them in New York, with a kaiju vibe ! They ("They" is for Namor, Norrin, Stan and Jack, of course) know how to deal with that kind of threat , and that's always a treat. Back to the thread, any special recommendation for some issues collected in this Epic "Freedom" ?

Mantis Girl's Weekly Dose of Silverado!

Silver Surfer Volume #3, Number #1
    July 1987, $1.25
Writer Steve Englehart, Artist Marshall Rogers

Namor has his 365 days with the Namor 365 thread so I thought I would include in this thread my weekly dose of Silver Surfer; it is a great way to celebrate one of my favorite characters and and even better excuse to re-read all my old comics!

This issue was one of the first I bought myself from a fifty cent bin at my LCS when I was 10 or 11. Already knowing the history of the SS and the way he was tragically bound to the earth because of his "sins" to Galactus was well known to me. After the first 3 pages and I saw the words; "FREE" and I think my eyes welled up with tears.

The issue starts out with SS trying once again for the "100th" time to break through the barrier surrounding our atmosphere but to no avail...he crashes to earth again and is met up by the FF (Reed, Sue, Ben, and Jennifer...Johnny is off on his love-fest with 'Alicia' after they tied the knot in FF #300).

While him and Reed are talking about the O-Zone layer surrounding the earth something massive strikes the SS with the force of a million hurricanes; "KARAM"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is the Champion (Tryco Slatterus) and he pounds the SS into the earth at lethal speed. Silver Surfer is unharmed though and after some excuse by Champs the battle ensues! Now remember that Champion is someone (who according to Ben) had no problem taking out Wonder Man, Hulk, Thor, Colossus, Sasquatch, and Ben himself (in Marvel 2 in 1 Annual #7). After only 3 pages of battle the SS has cleaned his clock! The Champion admits his first defeat ever since the beginning of our universe and soon takes a powder....but not without sending a subtle hit that SS could get off the world in some way.

Reed vows to figure out a way (finally), but the one who comes up with the obvious solution is our ever-loving blue eyed Thing; "how bout you try leaving without yer board"?

DUH!!!!!!!! After all these years the Thing is the one to figure out the solution.

A couple pages later and the SS is free of Earth and speeding on his way to confront Galactus. At first Big G is ready to impose an even greater punishment until SS tells him he will save Nova (who Big G seems to really really care about) from the clutches of the Kree. Big G agrees he can try to save her.

Now Nova is encased in a rescue proof cell of several layers of thick Vibranium (yes, the same stuff that Cap's shield is made of and the vaunted metal of the Wakandan nation). Well shown in this comic is the SS not only speeding towards the Kree world but also bursting through many walls of the much vaunted Vibranium (several feet thick) like it is made of the thinnest sheets of toilet paper!!!!

He recues Nova; earns the thanks and respect of Big G and the last words of Silverado after Galactus pardons him is; FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! As his soars off into space and towards issue #2!

For me, one of the greatest SS issues of all time!

Well, it looks like I was wrong... I was sure I checked all of the solicits and the next issue wasn't until the new #1 in January. Oh well, I'm certainly not complaining!!

I woke up and the thread was still at the top of the Marvel forum list - in every meaning of the word... With two good news ! Thanks to you both, Idisestablish and Mantis Girl, to share the solicits for Silver Surfer #15 and for the "Mantis Girl's Weekly Dose of Silverado!".

That's of course a stellar idea ! A wonderful review, with wonderful pics. Such a pleasant reading, at the very moment when the Dawn shows up over Paris... Enlightening !

I few more images. This time by....THE KING JACK KIRBY - CREATOR OF THE SILVER SURFER !

You believed it was Galactus ? What about Norrin then ? Galactus is not even responsible for the designed. He hired the King for that. The Big Purple Guy is a smart one...

It already did ! Look at the previous page :

What a masterpiece ! Obviously Galactus is not the only one to be beyond our comprehension : how is it possible that a human can create wonders like that... OK. Jack Kirby is a giant too. That can explain things...

The panel and the full-page come from FF #72 (March 1967). The great Jack Kirby will draw his very last page with his creation inside the pages of the Fantastic Four (for other books or covers I don't know) only five issues later, in FF #77 (August 77).

We all feel sad of course... And probably want to smash stuffs to calm down !!! I wonder if Jack's eyes were blue...

To ease the pain why not try a... TREASURE QUEST !!!

Jack Kirby drew two others full pages with the Silver Surfer after the one in this post. They are wonderful, both - but scanning an Omnibus is not easy... and they are probably much more enchanting in their full four-colour glory !!! If someone can find them and scan them, it could be so worthy...

Thank you for those scans Abe. This one too is in love when the King draws the Prince of space! Some of the greatest comics ever in my opinion; his Silver Surfer is so awesome I don't even mind the "space panties".

    I didn't noticed that detail !

( About that, and about the Rolex , I am the one who needs to apologized (the spin-doctor of one of our president said once that if you don't have a Rolex at the age of 50 it's like you've failed in your life... So here, when we hear that name, we feel the need to say that having other values is the real success... With that money I'll buy a comic book of 1940 for example...). And I noticed the green ! I really hope that it's an homage... And according to the Jim Lee's Namor of yesterday (thanks for that, Iron Maiden !), Namor would really appreciate a little bit of bling-bling. He deserves some showing off !

I noticed also the Silver on the watch. Now that Silverado is obviously back on Earth and that Namor seems to have to be punished for being able of destroying a planet for the greater good, the solution is obvious. Banishment ! Galactus should hire him as his herald. Imagine that : the Silver Sub-mariner, with his wings, without board, but wearing an emerald piece of space-tissue. That would be glorious ! Even I would wish to wear a Rolex. Now I'm sorry for derailing the thread a bit... too bad... I couldn't post something as silly as this on the Namor thread at this very moment... And I guess you could smile at my stupid idea ! . I'm finished !)

Next time I will try to find some Buscema to scan... or some Byrne. This thread deserves to stay visible, because, as you said, it's about the character of one of the "the greatest comics ever" !

I'm just hoping that there will be a second printing of the SS Omnibus that came out some years ago.

Abe you are always so funny it is okay to derail a little bit, the Prince of Space could take it.

Namor as a Herald would be awesome! I say him and Norrin team up to kick major butt in the universe. I would like it if Namor still looked the same though, with maybe just a glittering trail that flowed off his ankle wings!

Ken, I own all the floppies of 1-18 but I would love that omnibus too. I am always waiting for a decent copy so show up on line...gotta not give up, it will show up again!
