Uncanny X-Men. After things fall apart, on the run from the Avengers/Inhumans, hiding out in the old Outback Ghost Town but circling the globe where they're needed.
Storm (mericless leader, lost her school, found her backbone)
Iceman (following Ororo into hell, owes her, buddies with Sam)
Rachel Grey (team tp, fighting for the future, new romance: unexpected magic)
Cannonball (Storm's former spy within the Avengers, Bobby's bud, needs to find his son)
Frenzy (bad ass, trying to live right, ready to murder Daken)
Magik (team transport, lost her magic but kept the sword, new romance: playing with fire)
Daken (wild card, wild dog, not your father's Wolverine)
(Forge at home base, tuning those computers but ready for trouble at any moment)
(Amiko Kobayashi too, now Storm's ward, sneaking out, teenage non-mutant ninja)

My favourite incarnation of the X-Men was when they were based in the Australian outback. The core of that team with the addition of Nightcrawler would be ideal.

Disaster relief, big ideas, governments, ghettos, forests, deserts, poles and tropics, this team is the Outback era multiplied by the Byrne/Claremont World Tour era, with a modern and sexy slant. The real X-Men ala The Authority that Gillen's Extinction team was supposed to be. The Hellfire Club, refocused as a collection of the world's military industrial and corporate elite, are the main antagonists, as manifest in their dealings in polluting factories, companies deforesting the tropics, AI surveillance and data mining, false flag military operations, etc.
Storm- ala X-Treme era, badass leader, with a big picture, nature-focused vision and an elite splinter team that operates all over the globe apart from the school. Tired of playing nice, she assembles an edgy team of mostly younger mutants to help shift the balance in the confluence of environmental devastation and social upheaval gripping the world. Her team is fighting to have a world worth protecting, feared and hated be damned. Human and mutants, working together, can do a lot better. Political, powerful, revolutionary, and heartfelt in a way only Ororo can.
Sunspot- ala recent Avengers run, badass co-leader, financing and bringing the business acumen and science/tech support angle from AIM(which employs Trinary, Prodigy, Cypher, Triage, Hijack, Sage, and Forge, among many others) and connections from his time in the Hellfire Club. In addition to leading his own sub-team in AIM, he is starting a relationship with fellow young, rich, powerhouse mutant ...
Monet-elevated back to her original status as a genius and powerful telepath from her Gen X intro, Monet will be the premiere telepath of this crew, in addition to speedster, flying tank. Her collaborations with Sunspot and his AIM is more than just an intellectual connection, though. Moving past ages of torment and bitterness, in this new relationship has she rediscovered her youthful ambition and zest for life? Her ambassadorial and high society connections come into play as well.
Shatterstar- teleporter and melee fighter, 'Star is happy to be thrown into wild adventures in this team, fighting for his adopted world with his lover Julio beside him.
Rictor- investigating at a greater scale and breaking new ground with this team, Julio is also focused and motivated, and exploring a deeper understanding of his connection to the earth and its possible applications in his powers.
Flourish- leaving her parents home in Mexico to play on the world's stage with her mentor Storm, Marisol is the newbie but her sharp wit and novel perspective gives the team plenty to think about, and her ability to stimulate plant and fungal life forms are creating a whole new world of possibilities for the team.
Wolverine or Namor- the grizzled veteran of the team, and counterpoint to the youthful zeal of the rest of the team. Either way you get someone who's been around the block a lot longer than everyone else, and seen the worst in mankind. They keep things in perspective for Ororo as her idealism and ambition grows, while also becoming a nurturing influence for the rest of the team(and bringing the heat in a battle). Namor of course brings his Atlantean heritage/perspective and resources to the table, which I would love to play with(far more than what happened in Red), but I love a good Logan too, and he has an interesting perspective with having experience as a test subject and agent of the military industrial complex, so either works.
Let the flames destroy all but that which is pure and true!
