    Default Create your own "big 12" justice league line-up

    Childhood "Big 12" pantheon:
    Batman & Robin they always counted as one, The Twins count as one, as do the Hawks as they always showed up and worked as a pair.

    .

    Also fit the Pantheon:

    Zeus = Superman
    Hera = Wonder Woman
    Poseidon = Aquaman
    Hermes = Flash
    Apollo = Green Lantern
    Ares = Hawkman
    Artemis = Hawkwoman
    Hephaestus = Vulcan
    Eros = El Dorado
    Asclepius = Apache
    Dionysus = Samurai
    Castor and Pollux = Twins
    Hades = Batman

    In my mind, the three Absolutely Essential members for any "Justice League" roster are Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman.

    After that, I'm fond of the participation of several of the people who were part of the Bronze Age Satellite Era roster -- including Zatanna, Flash, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Black Canary, Elongated Man, and possibly even Red Tornado (although I was never one of his biggest fans).

    On the other hand, in the "Obviously Nonessential for a Justice League Roster, But Sometimes It's Handy to Have Them Around" column, I naturally place Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, and Oracle. Along with The Phantom Stranger, who is just too darn flaky to ever be considered "part of the team's regular roster."

    And in the "they have no business being part of a Justice League lineup" column, I am inclined to put such names as Blue Beetle (Ted), Booster Gold, Animal Man, Power Girl, Rocket Red (any of 'em), The Creeper (Jack Ryder), Captain Marvel/Shazam, and Maxima. Also Nightwing and Huntress and all of Batman's other proteges/sidekicks/imitators, etc. (Because who needs a second-rate imitation when you are lucky enough to have the original on the team roster?)

    So if I were given the chance to pick a twelve-person starting line-up for a new Justice League title, it might go this way:

    1. Superman (Clark)
    2. Batman (Bruce)
    3. Wonder Woman (Diana)
    4. Green Lantern (anybody would do -- but let's go with John Stewart for the sake of having an African-American family)
    5. Flash (anybody would do)
    6. Zatanna
    7. Red Tornado (John Smith)
    8. Green Arrow (Ollie)
    9. Black Canary (Dinah)
    10. Elongated Man
    11. Atom (I don't care which one -- but Ryan Choi would be fine if we need an Asian-American to keep it from looking too much like a "white boy's club")
    12. "The Obligatory Young Recruit" -- someone who hasn't been a high-profile superhero for long in whatever version of DC continuity this is happening in. And thus can be constantly getting helpful little tips from the Seasoned Veterans. I scarcely care if you call him (or her) "Firestorm" or "Vixen" or "Metamorpho" or "Aztek" or whatever.

    5. Vixen

    I think two-thirds of the names on your list had already become members of the Justice League by the end of the 1980s. And that was almost 30 years ago. Does that really qualify as "new and different"?

    With this particular mix of established characters, yes. At no point were all of these characters serving on a single team at the same time. And combine that with the newcomers, it's something distinct.

    Personally, while I like the character of Zatana I wouldn't particularly want her modern iteration on the Justice League, just because her silly magician costume with the fishnets doesn't really fit with the very superhero-y costume the JLA tends to have.
