Spiders are scary: an UNappreciation thread

I'm thinking about moving to Australia someday, but now that I've been reading about venomous spiders and I'm having second thoughts!



I mean, look at that thing!! How scary is that?

Is anybody else as scared as spiders as I am? Or am I just crazy?

No, you're not crazy. I'm scared to death of spiders. I find the creatures fascinating, because of the sheer volume of cool things they can do...but that doesn't mean I want any in my house. I went back to my home country of Bangladesh a long time back and went to the washroom. As I was about to get out of the bathroom, this spider carrying an egg crawled in through the top of the door.

I nearly blacked out and felt like my heart was beating 1000 beats a minute.

I don't particularly like spiders but I don't hate them and I'm not afraid of them. If I find one indoors I'll just scoop it up in some paper towel and toss it outside.

I have a true fear of spiders. I freak out when I see them. Now, I mostly have it under control, but every now and then, you will hear me scream like a little girl when I'm startled by one.

The thing is, there aren't really any deadly spiders where I live, and there were none where I grew up. There's a possibility of finding a brown recluse, but even that is rare. I am deathly allergic to bee stings, but bees don't really bother me. I remain very calm around them even though their bite will put me into anaphalctic shock. (I do carry an epi-pen.) But when I see a spider, it's like instant panic.

With me, it depends. If it's non venom, I don't care what it does, it's probably looking for water, or trying to hunt other bugs in your house, but for the most part, I do capture and put outside. Venomous spiders I will kill though. Around here we have fiddlebacks and black widows, but we also have wolf spiders, and they hunt the other ones, so I leave them alone.

I have a big garden spider by my light and it catches bee's. So nature is just doing its thing. I used to have a brown tarantula. But my ol' lady wouldn't let me keep it.

I like them. They look cool, they provide a valuable service and they do their own thing without hurting me. What's not to like?

If we can't accept that within our own species than spiders don't stand a chance.

I'm pretty scared of them. I've yet to run into a live brown recluse but I have killed black widows before. Other than the random outside fly spider or something the most that get in the house are wolf spiders.

Edit: To the OP....while not dangerous to humans Australia also is the home of the giant huntsman spider whose leg span can reach up to 12 inches. That would probably stop me in my tracks in fear seeing one of those.
