That's a lot of talented people working on it but I'm not too sure about it.
Like why set it 20 years after the first? That's not really enough time if you're going for any original cast to be in it and kind of random if you're going for a new cast to make them all older. Otherwise I'd go for Emily Blunt and Grant Gustin and Mary and Bert if it were like 2 years later.
It does seem like one really unnecessary remake, but then again, they've surprised me before.

Well, at least it doesn't sound like a remake at this point.
I don't know about unecessary. The 1964 is more than half a century old, and wasn't particulary faithful to the source material. If this results in a film (series) that P. L. Travers would at least not have hated it'd be worth it IMO.
Also, there are eight Mary Poppins books.
