Yeah, it's not as concentrated for rapid publication, and the financial rewards are much higher. Jon J Muth has made more from the handful of children's books he's illustrated than all his comic work combined. That's why he rarely does comic work-- even covers-- these days.

There are zombies everywhere with wires in their heads and a mother box in their hand; pathetically stumbling along sidewalks knocking into people, dogs and garbage cans; driving cars and even bicycles into the traffic and into pedestrians; sitting on buses and trains focused on that thing in their hand, unaware that there's a natural environment around them populated by living creatures, which they ought to attend to.

The last thing I want, as a survivor of the 20th century, is to become one of the zombie horde. And yet there are all these pressures for us hold-outs to buy a mother box and become a wireheaded zombie in order to do the daily routines of life we used to perform with simple pens and papers and pocket change..
This has got to be one of the best posts I've read in a while.

I dont share the same viewpoint, but I totally get it. And these things annoy me as well.

Of course....Im also part of the problem (three tablets, two gaming systems, a laptop, a desktop, and all the wi-fi you can get your bandwith on). I love my motherbox! And now, I want a phone case that actually looks like one....I wonder if such a thing exists?

I've avoided becoming that kind of public zombie. But I'm totally that kind of zombie at home. So I understand it completely, yet at the same time don't feel to be quite worthy of the soapbox to judge.

I'm in the UK and I am glad to say this has never been my experience. I've always been welcomed and helped in any shop, no matter the size. We moved last year and while my local shop is small and a bit cluttered, it has a window display and open doors.

    It's doable.

As in, I'm doing a custom one for myself right now.

It's been my experience that it's mostly an American thing. And, again, not all American shops. Golden Apple, no. Some nice shops in San Francisco or larger shops in NYC, no. But the corner shop in a smaller city or the just out of town shop in the midwest... way too often, yes. Even the smaller shops in New York or in LA can be creepy and unfriendly. There was one by UCLA for ages that made porn shops look friendly and welcoming.

Without Batman, DC would be as dead as a church on Super Bowl Sunday. Superman and GL might keep DC on life support. Maybe.

Sorry for the late response. Been having issues with my Internet.

I'm not seeing how the old version of Donna had less room to grow and I think it's rather... questionable that she needed to start out as a villain.

Also, Diana under the Finches has been shown in story to be easily fooled and two or three steps behind everyone. That's not just the characters saying it. That's how she's shown in story. See the issue where Donna leads the Amazons in slaughtering their brothers. Speaking of which, we can also add further derailing the Amazons to the flaws of the Finches' run.

DC could have taken any character in 1940 and made him into the Batman (just team him with a little kid and give him colourful villains), since Batman is a pastiche of different already established crime fighters and comic strip characters.

DC could have then taken that character in 1986 and re-invented him, stripping him of all those bright features, to adapt him to the "Dark Age."

Discovering Superman was a lot more tricky for Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson, given the many rounds that Siegel and Shuster made with the character before they finally allowed him to be published in ACTION COMICS. So it's not as likely that DC would have found a "Superman" as it is that they would have found a "Batman," under other circumstances.

I think DC would have capitalized on a completely different type of character, such as Western hero Jack Woods or supernatural hero Nadir, Master of Magic--if they had no "Superman."

Calling something out on being sexist, racist etc is just as valid a form of critique as anything else.

For that matter, "unbiased judgment" of entertainment doesn't exist. The only objective judgment of a piece of entertainment is whether or not it exists. Everything else is subjective and demonstrates some form of bias. "Over-caffeinated emotions" absolutely do have a place in talking about a work of entertainment or art, just as much as "actual logic and reason." Being a jackass or entitled, however, regardless of how emotional one is (or not), doesn't have much good to it.

People enjoyed him to a point, mostly due to JLI nostalgia it seems, but it wasnt until after his death that his "fan base" actually appeared. I've always thought that it was more about railing against change than it was about Ted, and his actual fans' voices get lost in the volume of cries from bandwagoners that really translate to "I hate Jaime because he didnt exist when I was a kid!"
I pretty much know exactly what you mean, and it isn't just limited to Ted Kord, either, nor does the character strictly have to die. People are still doing this and similar to this very day. :/

Falling in love and becoming a fan of the new guys and gals is so hard. And don't let yourself be a fan of both new and old. That's ripe grounds for heresy right there.
