Knight was born a Southern Baptist, became a Catholic and then a Mormon (!) and yet always has been an ally, from supporting the early drag community at the Appollo Theater to participating in the very first major AIDS benefit, "That's What Friends Are For" with Dionne Warwick, Elton John and Stevie Wonder.
