Review up in my "Top 100 Greatest Films" thread...
    https://community.cbr.com/showthread...lms-quot/page9

    MOONLIGHT (2016) [OSCAR]
writer & director. Barry Jenkins [nom.]
Starring: Alex Hibbert, Ashton Sanders, Trevante Rhodes, Naomie Harris [nom.] and Mahershala Ali [OSCAR]

ONE LINE SYNOPSIS: Liberty City, Miami. Following the life of a withdrawn outcast from Little (Hibbert) into Chiron (Sanders) and finally Black (Rhodes), as he navigates his evolving shame of his homosexuality.

"At some point you gotta decide for yourself who you gonna be." ~ Juan

THOUGHTS: I wanted to love this so much, as it's award winning LGBT+ goodness. Maybe I expected too much, but I was left deeply underwhelmed. On the positives: Mahershala Ali is GENIUS in his performance; easily the best part of the film. The most minuet flick of his eyes conveys volumes. Without showboating, he manages to build layer upon layer of nuance into his character, and the film is worse off in his absence. I must commend the casting on the three leads, from boy to teenager to man they are very talented and believably the same person. I just wish the film didn't get progressively worse. The first act is great, and I was hooked, the second still somewhat compelling due to Ashton Sander's tender performance and the third act... was... tepid? That was the pay off?? Trevante Rhoades is STUNNING to look at, let speak facts, but I felt little impact with that conclusion. In fact I felt nothing, and that's a large problem in a movie that is quite low on narrative. The biggest fault for me is the directing. I HATED Some of the camera work, it was genuinely giving me a headache. Too inconsistent, was it going for realism or art house; both is fine but pick one. It lacked focus on narrative, erratic in style but seemingly unintentional. It just left me very cold. Pity.

    OVERALL
An interesting exploration of growing up gay in a very masculine driven environment; a very sensitive narrative that just... lacked that gut-punch. It was too gentle. The performances are strong, and Mahershala Ali is absolutely brilliant (as always). Naomi Harris... was too much (for me) and the directing really didn't gel with me. A noble effort and one I am pleased succeeded for others.
    ~ rating: ★★★☆☆ [grade: B]

I feel like I probably shouldn’t say what I actually thought of moonlight because I would definitely cop it haha.

Is anyone else watching Hollywood on Netflix? I only saw one ep before my sub lapsed but it was interesting. Not perfect but interesting

I'm liking Hollywood so far. It's flawed and "overly optimistic" maybe about racial injustices and workplace inequality being "solved" by making a diverse film together. But in terms of the acting, the characters, fleshing out the period piece world of this probably idealized version of old Hollywood its good so far to me. I am on episode 3.

Ryan Murphy is good with creating LGBT friendly creative platforms, but his weakness has always been maintaining the same quality, creativity and intrigue in later seasons imo

Oh go on, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the movie. I have no-one to talk to about it.

I've watched episode 1. I did like how it had this 80s homoerotica porn vibe to it, but was put off by seeing more of women naked than men, even when it's all about a guy who's a male prostitute. LOL! Classic Hollywood.

I do agree... on both points. I think it's wonderful that he not only uses LGBT+ characters but actively hires LGBT+ actors. He's really a beacon of LGBT+ goodness (along with RuPaul) in this world. Ryan Murphy also does an AMAZING job with female heavy casts (which I also approve of).

I think they're making a storm in a teacup, personally. He praises the acting, the visuals, the concept and story... just has an issue with "historical accuracy." Since when did that matter? To write off an entire show because it didn't deliver what YOU think it should is dumb, it never made such a promise. Ryan Murphy can either be focused on history (American Crime Story or Feud) OR he uses historical figures and "moments" to tell a fantasy (American Horror Story). This was the latter. This guy is objecting to an issue the series NEVER said it was trying to do. For all his "well written" thoughts, he missed the forest for the trees.

Seems like a case of a str8 "ally" spending a little too much effort in telling a gay man about LGBT+ history...

    P.R.I.D.E.

Right now in the world there is so much justified anger, born from inexcusable prejudice. It’s a fitting time to celebrate Pride because that was an event born of the Stonewall Riots. Not the Stonewall Peaceful Protests, the Stonewall RIOTS! Started when a black trans HIV+ woman (Marsha P. Johnson) could no longer turn the other cheek, could no longer look the other way, could no longer stay silent as injustice continued. As the world did not make things better on its own, when left to its own devices. RIOT is not a dirty word. RIOT is the uncontrollable expression of centuries of oppression breaking free. Celebrate Pride. Celebrate #blacklivesmatter. Celebrate every voice that is saying ENOUGH!

Well said Kieran, I couldn’t agree more. It’s pretty obvious which side of history we should support. I really hope this is the moment of change not just in the US but in Australia too where we need to scream black lives matter.

You know, a cop went into a gay bookstore here just a few months ago and snapped a guys arm? He said it was “mistaken identity”. Then there was a show trial where the police literally policed the police and said “good news, nothing dodgy happened”. Still disgusts me
