Not sure why someone who doesn't believe in Jesus would spend his life studying the scriptures. Sounds like maybe he does believe in them, but refuses to admit it. It would be like me saying "Boy, I sure didn't care for that book I read...but I'm going to go home and spend the next several years of my life studying it."

A couple of quotes about the Bible by one of my favorite artists, Rich Mullins:

“The Bible is not a book for the faint of heart -- it is a book full of all the greed and glory and violence and tenderness and sex and betrayal that benefits mankind. It is not the collection of pretty little anecdotes mouthed by pious little church mice -- it does not so much nibble at our shoe leather as it cuts to the heart and splits the marrow from the bone. It does not give us answers fitted to our small-minded questions, but truth that goes beyond what we even know to ask.”

“We were given the Scriptures to humble us into realizing that God is right, and the rest of us are just guessing.”
Every day is a gift, not a given right.

Or the significant influence of Christianity on Western Civilization interests him and he wished to study it. I am a non-believer, yet the Bible interests me.
There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!

I am a border line non-believer. I just started to read the bible to understand more about the life of Jesus and Christianity. You dont have to believe everything to study the bible.

I love Rich Mullins! His music is fascinating, very different than the mainstream. A very thoughtful individual gone from this mortal plane far too soon.
