Default Actors/Actresses who will always be a certain character.

We all know aftors and actresses who have trouble being seperating from an iconic role. Usually it is a kid actor or actress. But that isn't always the case.

Neil Patrick Harris will always be Doogie Howser
Soleil Moon Frye will always be Punky Brewster
Richard Dean Anderson will always be MacGyver

To a lesser extent Hilary Duff will always be Lizzy McGuire

More recently Pablo Shrieber will always be Porn Stache

What's interesting is when this happens to people with a large body of work in their field. Like Sigourney Weaver being know more as Ripley than any other character, which only represents four of the many, many movies she's been. Prior (and outside of due to my age) Jurassic Park I had no idea Sam Neil had been far more characters than Dr Grant. Other actresses and actors have been known for the characters they portray, but that's from a lack of either doing plays/foreign films/independents, that don't get as much exposure. Or being in a TV show. I think it's a bit unfair to say an actor or actress is know for a character, like David Duchovney or Gillian Anderson as Mulder and Scully because TV shows are intended to get the viewer familiar with the character and for them to be interested in them to invest a hour a week to watch these characters. Where as movies are just 1-2 hours or 3-6 hours in a trilogy of movies. But that's nothing like a 10 season TV series with 15-20 episodes a season.

Strongly disagree. On this particular case, I think this guy managed to ditch being branded by the character he played as a kid. To me he will always be Barney Stinson.

Lucy Lawless will always be Xena, and Gillian Anderson will always be Scully.

Donald Faison is pretty stuck as Turk for me. Even when he plays a different character, he plays Turk.

For many, Mark Hammil is the definitive Joker, voicing the character in Batman The Animated series and it's spinoffs, as well as the Arkham games. Although it's really only voice work he did. (Of course Hammil's also done other voice acting roles, he's Skips on on Regular Show and also even voiced Wolverine once and of course he was Hobgoblin in Spider-Man TAS). Live action after ROTJ he hasn't done too much of note, except of course for the recent Force Awakens and a cameo in Kingsman, although he was the lead in the 90's Wing Commander games which utilized Full motion video cutscenes.

Perhaps it's because I never really got into X-Files (planning on marathon-ing that eventually) but I thought she was wonderful as Bedelia Du Maurier in NBC's Hannibal. I didn't have any trouble accepting her as a different character at all.

Daniel Radcliffe will probably always be Harry Potter, although he's still getting steady work so he might pull away from it eventually. Emma Watson has successfully detached herself from Hermione, IMO. Rupert Grint will definitely always be Ron Weasley.

Tobey Maguire will always be Peter Parker/Spider-Man. He may not be the Spider-Man by the time Tom Holland gets his own feature but I don't think I'll ever see Maguire as anyone else.

Daniel Radcliffe will never escape from being Harry Potter in my mind.

George Clooney is always George Clooney in everything I've seen him in.
Emma Frost, Rogue, Felicia Hardy, Helena Bertinelli, Allison Blaire, Barbara Gordon, Monica Rambeau, Carol Danvers, Illyana Rasputin, Ororo Munroe, Harleen Quinzel, Lorna Dane, Irene Adler, Kate Kane, Rachel Grey Summers, Jean Grey, Diana Prince, Barbara Ann Minerva, Donna Troy, Jennifer Walters, Gwen Stacy, Wanda Maximoff = PERFECTION!

I think NPH is better known for Barney Stinson than Doogie Howser at this point. Even his role as himself in the Harold and Kumar movies was basically a precursor to Barney.

Bruce Campbell will always be Ash.

Will Smith will always be Will Smith.

The Fresh Prince, of course. Including all of the alternate futures, where he matures, move away from Bel Air, becomes a scientist and fights vampires, a government agent and battles aliens, or a police office and punches robots.

All of the listed actors are naught but rank amateurs in terms of character relegation.
Ladies, gentlemen ... I present to you the following:

R Lee Emery as Gunnery Sergeant Hartman (Full Metal Jacket).

    When did he fight vampires?

I should have clarified, technically vampire-like mutants, in I Am Legend.
