I was looking at the new Marvel available LCS online. A few at $4.99, are these oversized issues or is the $5 Marvel comic the new standard?

No it is not the new standard, thank god for that, it's just that prices are higher because they are 1st issues of the all-new all-different marvel universe. After the 1st issue the series will go back to $3.99.
"It's fun and it's cool, so that's all that matters. It's what comics are for, Duh."
Words to live by.
Are they oversized issues or is it $5 because they are #1?
It's for oversized issues. For now. Soon enough $5 will be the regular price. They've done it before.
On the plus side, they all seem to come with digital copy redemption codes. During Marvel NOW and All-New Marvel NOW, $3.99 books had codes, while $2.99 ones didn't. Giving the illusion that the code was worth a dollar (though it's not like you had choice; a book came with it or didn't, and was more expensive if it did).
I'm just trying to decide am I in or am I a trade waiter?
Every time the price of the monthly jumps I dump titles and become more of a trade waiter. I'm to the point now where 80% of my reading is in trades.
Trades or even HC for 6 issues are a much more economical solution than monthly, even after factoring in discounts.
I used to think supporting lesser tiered characters meant something towards keeping those titles in print. We are now at the point where the start/stop & renumber plague has been upon us for so long that I don't think it matters.

If you don't mind waiting six months, Marvel Unlimited is a hell of a deal.
