    The "it only affects mutants" wasn't a particular humanising analogy, because one of the most problematic stigmas around tryign to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS in the mid-to-late-80s was that it only affected homosexual men. Some of the information sent out was depressingly inaccurate and scary.

    I'd like to insert a "how times change" comment but it's not really warranted...

    What it was a metaphor for doesn't prove that it helped to "humanise it", do you have statistics to back this up or is it all in your head?
